Anole is a free, open source extension for the Chrome  browser. Recently one of Anole's users reached out with a particular need that the extension wasn't quite meeting.  It was actually very encouraging to find out at least one other person was using the extension to save some time on their own tasks. 

However, this user also wanted to save one more click―by having Cyrilic characters changed to the English ones that represent the same sound, a process know colloquially as *translit*.

#### Development Story

Translit can be important for a number of reasons online. It can ensure broadest possible compatibility of a string with older or simpler devices that may not support all the needed characters.

Cyrillic, derived from the Greek [uncials](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncial_script), is the alphabet commonly used to represent Russian, Ukrainian and several other world languages.  Many  Slavic languages in regions historically influenced by the Eastern Orthodox Church use Cyrillic.

Mongolian is another language frequently encountered in Cyrillic.  There is also of course a traditional Mongolian script, but Cyrillic is also used owing to its fairly consistent connection between symbol and sound. It's this consistency that also makes it straightforward to implement transliteration in an extension like Anole.

Based on this feedback received I decided to implement transliteration from Cyrillic characters to English. If you do try Anole and it's not quite what you need don't hesitate to suggest a new feature or improvement. The same goes for any of the projects on my GitHub account.

I genuinely welcome feedback. And remember, if it's a [bug report]() or [new idea]() it may be eligible for a Utopian incentive as well.

So, to activate translit in the extension click on the Anole extension icon in the browser toolbar. Then select **Options**.  The options page for Anole will appear in a new tab. About half way down the options menu make sure **Active** is checked under **Transliterate Cyrillic**.

Thereafter whenever you select and transform Cyrillic characters with Anole they will be transliterated. Other types of characters will continue to behave as before.

Hopefully this new feature will be some use to a few extra users.
