When looking at other people, we actually look at ourselves but in an indirect manner. People judge others based on how they would feel being in their shoes. For instance, you see someone who is obese, and you may think: “Ugh, what a lazy person! I can’t stand fat people!” But, what you’re saying is: “You’re not supposed to be happy. I wouldn’t be happy If I was overweight, so you shouldn’t be either.” Your ego is telling you to hate them because you don’t love yourself fully. Rich people tend to hate poor people; this is because they could not love themselves if they were poor. Your ego becomes indirectly attacked when you see someone overweight enjoying ice cream; you cringe because deep down you’re actually jealous, jealous that someone could be happy in a situation you could not be. The ego is very determined and doesn’t like being threatened. Fitness and developing healthy habits has created this ego mind in you, which, in your mind, puts you on a pedestal above everyone who isn’t doing the same. Today's my dad’s birthday; he would have been 67 today. I remember having these thoughts of sadness when I would see a son with their dads, especially if the son and father were older in age. I get angry if I see someone mistreating their parents. My ego tries to take control, and says: “How could they not be thankful to have parents!” “I could never treat my parents that way!” I talk to my mom every day, and when one of my friends says they haven't spoken to their parents in weeks, I get annoyed. But, I quickly realize this in me and suppress my ego by letting myself know that everyone's relationships are different and that the love I have for my dad may not be universal, and I’m not aware of their backgrounds nor walked a mile in their shoes. I understand what it’s like to judge someone based on my own life: “Well, I would never… How could someone be so ungrate… If that were me, I would have called right away…”
