Holding Onto the Little Things When Car Camping
We all have those amazing memories in our childhood that we wish we could remarry and keep. I'm talking about "The Little Things". Hold onto the little things that mean the world to you now... thank you for blessing us with your package of pure joy! We'll never know how those things can affect our heart and soul forever...

I remember as a child when my mom would get me sleeping bags. She had them in different designs, one day it just so happened that her little girl brought one home from grandma's house. My mother was so excited - she knew right then and there that this was her "treasure". The little girl was only about two and just started crawling around, but my mother kept getting her sleeping bags ready for the next day's use. She wasn't aware that the "little things" would turn into much bigger treasures in her own home.

As a child, we all had these sleeping bags with synthetic insulation. The weather was getting colder everyday and it wasn't any better inside the synthetic insulation in sleeping bags. And the seams near the corners were starting to wear down, making it difficult to keep the bag closed properly.

But my mother did have a secret remedy for this problem. She would always put a layer of thick insulation fabric right at the bottom of each of the sleeping bags. This was my first hint that something was wrong. The bottom layer of synthetic insulation would do nothing for comfort. In fact, it was more like a layer of a thick blanket. The next time, we gathered around the tent, it was obvious to me that something was wrong.

But it didn't take me long to figure out what was going on. All of the sudden, it became obvious, the bags weren't sealed well. The air was escaping, making it very uncomfortable to stay in. My mom had to admit that she really didn't know what to do anymore, but she continued to use the sleeping bags until one Saturday afternoon.

My dad, who was staying at another aunt's house, found out what was going on when he went to check up on us on Sunday afternoon. He told my mom that he could see holes in our sleeping bags and he didn't think there was anything wrong. I didn't want to believe him, so I asked my dad if he could see them.

He confirmed that they were indeed filled with insulation. But what was wrong with the sleeping bags? My mom said that it was because she used too much insulation, and it was wearing away at the corners. It made it harder for her to get in and out of the tent, and it was definitely keeping the air in better than it should have been.

Mom was right - it was time to buy some new sleeping bags. She had bought a special spray attachment for the zipper, which helped seal the bag more tightly, without over-sealing. She also had left zip handles on both ends, to help keep the air inside. That solved the problem, but the bag was still leaking. So, she bought another spray attachment and also put a second zippered handle on both ends to make it easier to get in and out of the tent. It solved that problem as well.

We tried using double layers of insulation, but that only worked so well. If we really wanted to save on insulation, we would have had to take a chance and go with the mummy style sleeping bags. The down fill makes up for the lack of insulation, and that helps keep the temperature down in the summer, and warmer in the winter. And we don't even have to pack extra sleeping bags - we brought two!

There are many benefits to using mummy style sleeping bags for car camping. They are warmer than the traditional sleeping bags but still very comfortable. They keep you nice and warm, and that is important if you plan to do any walking during your car camping trip. They are also much more affordable than a traditional sleeping bag. And they will keep you nice and warm no matter what the weather outside is doing.

You will find that many brands of camping gear also use fiberfill power filling. If you buy a quality brand like Coleman, you won't have to worry about getting your gear filled at all. But for the budget conscious camper, you can still get a great night's sleep and use less insulation by using a traditional bag filled with polyurethane foam. Woofwear makes a very good goose down sleeping bag that uses almost nothing because the foam is naturally insulated and yet still fills out nicely.
