<h3>*Several years ago I planted some milkweed seeds to attract Monarch butterflies to lay eggs in my yard. I never found any caterpillars on the plants. Some years I would just pull it up and plant other things in it's spot. Well, I guess it was busy reseeding itself and it came back every year. I let the milkweed plants stay put this year and was very surprised to find a couple of Monarch caterpillars on the plants about 10 days ago. Here are some photos from that day.*</h3> <center> ___  ___  ___ <h3>The smaller caterpillar was busy eating the milkweed! ___  ___ ___ <h3>The next morning I looked for the very large caterpillar and it was nowhere to be found. I hoped it had crawled off somewhere to find a suitable place to make a change to a chrysalis. ___ I really wanted to watch the last little caterpillar go through its stages, so I decided to set it up with the milkweed plants and some nice sticks to crawl around on inside of a large plastic jar with cheesecloth on top. I've done this before with other caterpillars.</h3> ___  ___  ___  ___  ___ Five days ago I noticed it crawling all over all of the sticks and it wasn't interested at all in eating. Later that night it had decided on the perfect spot and attached itself to begin its transformation into a chrysalis. It transformed this next morning and here is the beautiful chrysalis!</h3> ___  ___  ___ So now I'm in the waiting game. The adult butterfly will emerge in 10-14 days from the day it transformed into a chrysalis. ___ I live in the the Dallas,Texas area which is in the fly zone for Monarch butterflies. What does that mean? Well, when they migrate north from their wintering grounds in Mexico in the spring they pass through here. When they migrate south in the fall, they pass through again. The fall migration is about to take place! I plan on releasing this butterfly to join the rest of the Monarchs to migrate. ___ *All photos taken by me @violetmed. My mother-in-law introduced me to this more than 15 years ago when my children were small. She actually mailed me swallowtail caterpillars with some parsley from her backyard to our house to let my children watch the stages. They survived being mailed and we put in more parsley and they all changed to chrysalis' and then emerged as butterflies and we set them free. It was great!

That's so exciting. My neighbor and I have butterfly tents and we help the monarchs too. It's fascinating that the fall butterflies live longer because they migrate to Mexico! we are told not to use the milkweed that survives winter here because it would stop the migration! Great photos, and well documented!

Thank you! That's so cool you both have the butterfly tents! Yes the tropical milkweed is the one they say to pull up this time of year! I had some one year and it died off and didn't come back the next year! I've got a butterfly habitat coming in the mail tomorrow that I can place the chrysalis in so it will have plenty of room to emerge and dry off safely. Then I can take a few photos and set it free to nectar on some flowers and be on it's way with the next cool northern breeze! I even got to tag a Monarch at the State Fair of TX last fall. Every year the State Fair grounds has lots of Monarchs stopping by their flower gardens and resting up for the trip south!
