Resident Evil 6: One of the biggest letdowns
I think that if you talk to most people about what the most famous video game franchises have been over the past 20 years or so they would have to be lying or inept to not mention Resident Evil.  It first launched onto the scene on the PS1 and all of us were captivated.  For many of us it was our first introduction to survival horror.  I know that the day I got it me and a friend stayed up all night playing it... it was that good.

However, they can't all be 10's and Resident Evil 6 is definitely not a 10.

Just before this game was released there was a TON of hype surrounding it.  When we were told that the scope of the game was going to be huge, spanning the entire globe and involving 4 different campaigns and 7 lead characters, we really thought we were in for a treat.  We were also told that this game was going to be a bit more "action oriented" than releases in the past, which many of us were apprehensive about but thought that it might mean more run-and-gun the likes of which we all enjoyed in RE4.   

The product that we were eventually delivered 2012 was indeed more action driven, but not at all in a good way.

Right from the start you find yourself facing many more enemies that you normally would but unlike in RE4 where the objective isn't necessarily to kill them all but rather to avoid them for a certain period of time this one expects you to shoot your way out and you have plenty of ammo in order to accomplish this, which is exactly the opposite of what RE games are all about.  There are also events where you aren't even controlling the action but it is more like quicktime events where you just hit a button on occasion, which I think is kind of universally hated outside of God of War.

I think I speak for a lot of Resident Evil fanbois when I say that the puzzle breaks are a big part of the fun for me in this franchise, and 6 has some of that, but mostly the game focuses on massive gun battles... of which there are entirely too many

They did try to mix things up by having moments where you interact with motorcycles, jetskis, and even fly a fighter plane in a battle against an aircraft carrier but these sections are few and far between and honestly the motorcycle segment, which begins with you jumping it off the roof of a 10 story building and safely landing on the ground, is just absurd.  I say this because while you already did something extremely impossible at the beginning of that segment, slight mishandling of the same bike on the road results in you crashing and dying.  Consistency is important people!  

It was a very ambitious story attempt since the 4 campaigns do interweave even though it isn't apparent that they are going to and sometimes it is a real "gotcha!" moment when you end up being involved in something that another campaign already encountered and you are simply looking at it from another angle.  

The games "extras" such as multiplayer are kind of cool but again, this is where RE starts looking like an action game instead of survival horror, which is what makes Resident Evil so unique in the first place.  I can't understand what motivated them to attempt to move away from that.

How so many quicktime events made it to the final cut without some of the devs or testers standing up and saying "this doesn't really add anything to the game and is actually really annoying" is beyond me.  I mean right out of the gate you are subjected to unavoidable quicktime events that require precision timing and honestly, you get sick of them in the first hour only to be subjected to 19 or so more hours of them.   Thankfully, I think RE learned their lesson from the horrible feedback they received on this and we haven't seen them very heavily featured in any games since then.  

Of course some of the campaigns were better than others and mostly I would say to play none of them but if I was forced to choose I would say that Leon's is probably the best but only because it seems the most "Resident Evil-y."  The worst one is easily Chris' which is just a badly executed race against the clock where you are constantly being pursued only to have moments of completely unjustified pauses filled with some of the dumbest dialogue ever featured in a game (and I am including all of Barry's dialogue from RE1 in this comparison as well.)  

The shift away from survival horror was an ambitious one, but ultimately it was so poorly received in an overall sense that the top brass over at Capcom decided to return to it in future releases.  You can't call this game a complete failure despite the near universal disdain for it since it did end up being one of the top selling games of the year and I think I speak for most people when I say that I want my money back and please for the love of everything holy do NOT remake this one.

I never played this one because it was too expensive and I never really heard anyone talk about it either, perhaps the fact that it was considered bad is the reason why I never heard about it too.

well if it wasn't Resident Evil it would probably be considered a pretty great game.  But RE is held to different standards than most other titles and the near elimination of the survival horror aspects irritated a lot of people, including me.

I played this game at a friend's house recently and the very start of the game is the completely opposite of what a Resident Evil game is supposed to be.  The buildings falling down and the insurmountable amount of zombies and of course the quicktime events were just too much.  I never made it past the first section.

that's what struck me about it initially as well.  It starts out and it is definitely NOT Resident Evil.  I think what happened is that a lot of people responded well to the starting sequences of RE 4 and some dev genius thought "hey, why don't we make an entire game like that? "
