How Produce Good Seeds
![u5o7073prt.jpg](https://img.esteem.ws/u5o7073prt.jpg)
**To produce good seeds, the following steps are needed:**

**Step 1: Healthy Plants**
--

To produce quality seeds, the first step is to plant healthy plants. This requires healthy soil, sufficient compost and mulch.

**Step 2: Choose the Best Seed**
--

Always take seeds from the best plants.
The characteristics of this plant are usually:
• Produce fruit or leaves that are delicious and healthy.
• Free from disease and naturally resistant to pests.
• Resistant to extreme conditions. For example, able to withstand very dry or hot conditions, or can still grow on rocky soil.
• Slow to produce seeds. Gather seeds from plants that produce the most recent flowers and seeds, not the first.

Select seeds from many plants. If you plant trees, such as teak trees, choose seeds from many different teak trees. Likewise for other plants. When choosing seeds, you will get a crop karristristik for the next crop. If you choose a healthy plant, the next plant will have the same characteristics as the parent plant.

Big seeds generally last longer than smaller seeds!

**Step 3: How to Harvest the Seeds**
--

Label the plants to be taken so that the plants are not harvested for consumption. Wait until the plant is ripe before picking the seeds. This means letting the plant pass a stage that is suitable for consumption. Young fruit has young seeds, so they cannot germinate.
The best time to pick seeds is before noon, when the sun is shining and the weather is sunny. When harvesting seeds in the rainy season, you can pick fruit, seeds, or even better by pulling out the whole plant and hanging it near the fireplace. A little moisture will make the seeds become damaged.

**How to Harvest**
**Tomato Seeds,** Eggplants When they are ripe on the plant, they are a bit soft but not rotten. Pick it by hand, the best fruit from the best tree.

**Cucumber, Melon**
One month after you pick the ones for consumption (so the seeds ripen).
Pick it by hand, the best fruit from the best plants.

**Big Chili**
When ripe on a plant or already red.
Pick it by hand, the best fruit from the best tree.

**Lettuce, green leafy vegetables**
Wait until the seed wrap is brown and dry but not opened.
Wrap it in a bag and cut the stems so that no seeds will be scattered during collection.

**Chickpeas, Corn, Sunflower**
Let the seeds dry in the plants in the dry season, pick them when ripe in the rainy season and dry near the fireplace.

Pick it by hand when the seeds are ready.

**Pumpkin**
When ripe in plants, leave it for 2-3 weeks before the seeds are taken.
Pick it by hand, the best fruit from the best tree.

**Step 4: Clean the Seed**
--

Seeds wrapped in skin or shells can be peeled and separated by hand. Small-skinned seeds can be stored in a bag, then folded and carefully squeezed to separate the seeds. Every remaining plant must be separated from the seeds / seeds by winnowing or by hand.

Seeds from tomatoes, cucumbers and pumpkins need to be removed and placed in containers that are given water. The seeds must be cleaned properly and then rinsed so that all the flesh of the seeds is separated from the seeds. The seeds are then dried.

Tomato and cucumber seeds can be fermented to eliminate several diseases. Take seeds and pulp from ripe fruit. Put it in a container of water and leave it for several days. Foam will form on the surface of the water in the container, this shows that there is a fermentation process. The seeds can then be washed with water. All remaining fruit flesh must be removed. Then spread the seeds on a plastic, wood or metal plate to be aerated under the shade.

**Step 5: Dry the Seeds**
--

Drying the seeds is a very important part of the process of storing seeds. If the seeds are not dried properly they will rot when stored. Seeds can be dried in any way you can.

However, it is very important to follow the following practical steps to get the best results:
• Expose and air the seeds. Flat iron, wicker trays, used paper, mats or others can be used as a base. For large seeds, place it in a woven bag and hang it to dry. Turn it over once or twice a day so that all the seeds are dry.
• Protect the seeds from animals, especially mice.
• For seeds that are small and light, give extra protection because these seeds are easy to fly.
• Small seeds generally need 1 week and large seeds need about 1-2 weeks to dry completely.
• Begin the drying process by placing the seeds for two days in the shade or indoors. Then move it to the hot sun for half a day for the following days. This will help kill the insects and their eggs. Put the seeds into the house at night. In the rainy season, it would be better to dry near the fireplace.

Use a bite test to find out if the seed is dry or not. Bite a seed slowly. If the seed is hard and does not leave bite marks, it means the seed is ready to be stored. If there are bite marks on the seed, it means the seed is not completely dry and needs to be dried again. If your teeth break when biting, then for the next test do not bite too hard!

**Step 6: Save the Seed**
--

After the seeds are dry, good storage needs to be done. If the climate is not favorable, the seeds can rot quickly if the storage is wrong.

In storage, seeds must be protected from:
• Air, which will reduce the life span of seeds.
• Moisture, which will make the seeds rot.
• Heat, which will reduce the number of seeds that can grow when planted.
• Animals, which can damage seeds.
• Insects, which can eat or damage seeds. If the insect eggs are in a storage container, the eggs can hatch and the insect chicks can eat the seeds.
• Light, which can also damage the seed.

To prevent this problem, make sure that the seeds are completely dry and clean. Then, when it is sunny, place the seeds in an airtight container.

To reduce the problem of humidity, firewood ash can be added to the bottom of the container (of course, cold wood ashes). Can also be used milk powder or other seeds that are very dry, this will absorb excess moisture.
