How to Build Up a Reputation of Being Direct and Forthright
A great way to build trust with people and earn trust is to take ownership of your own words. When you take ownership of your words, people are much more likely to believe you. You can build trust by using direct speech. I'm not talking about quoting numbers out of the book or anything like that. I'm talking about using real life examples and taking direct actions that show you how people earn trust.

Taking direct action is something that we all do when we want to build trust. We all have conversations we have with people at work or in our personal lives. In each of these situations, we are building trust by simply being whom we are. For example, when I give a presentation, I use direct speech to let people know what I need to do, what I have to say, and why I have to say it. When I hand out flyers or business cards, I go out of my way to tell people where they can get the latest information on new services and programs. When I interview people for a job, I let people know that I'm hiring to help them solve their problems, and I always let people know that I look forward to meeting with them again.

Now, it is entirely possible to give a speech or a flyer and never take ownership of it. That's fine if it's totally irrelevant to your goal. However, if you are trying to build trust, owning your words means owning up to the results. If you're giving a speech or presenting business cards, take ownership of your words and stand by them. If you are actively interviewing people for a job, you must own up to the results, even if you didn't mean for them to come to you.

The only way to build trust is to consistently do the right thing. If you allow people to take ownership of the outcome and not hold you accountable for it, they'll quickly lose trust in you. But if you take the initiative to let people know what the outcome is and then you follow through with action, even if you didn't mean for it to happen, people will respect your willingness to be transparent.

I always take responsibility for any actions taken, whether they are good or bad. And I only speak for myself. I can't honestly expect people to take the actions I suggest because I don't think they can. However, if people truly believe that they have a positive effect on me, I know that I can create amazing things. People will respect me, they will buy from me, and they will want to be around me.

But, regardless of how good you are at what you do, if you aren't genuine it won't matter. This goes for anything that you do in life. When you treat people like they are competent at everything without trying too hard or holding them responsible, you show them that you are confident and strong-willed. When you take the initiative to share your opinion or give information that you feel strongly about, you show people that you're willing to be an active part of the conversation and to really listen to what they have to say.

When you treat people like you're interested in what they have to say, they will listen to what you have to say. You will learn more about them, trust them, and be open to their ideas. This is the best way to get their trust and develop a level of honest communication with them. It will also result in them perceiving you as a leader who is genuinely concerned about what's going on in their lives.

There are lots of ways to build up a reputation of being direct and forthright. The Internet can be a powerful tool for this if you use it to help you find others and communicate with them. When you're able to do that, be sure to do so in a way that shows your interest in them and who they are. The more you participate, the more they'll see you as a real person with whom they can build a long lasting relationship and depend on.
