### Societies all over the world, as well as the global society of Homo Sapiens, are in a state of limbo, the dictionary definition of which is: "an uncertain period of awaiting a decision or resolution." This latest global pandemic, combined with previously unseen levels of interconnectivity provided by the internet, has re-created an awareness of our interdependence, which we seem to have lost with the expansion of our tribes to cities, countries, and now the world.<br>

That's the positive interpretation at least. In America we now see prominent people who fought against a single payer healthcare system suddenly turn around. They realize, listening to their rhetoric at least, that we're all in this together and that one's own health is directly linked to the health of the least insured people around them. There's this beautiful theory in network sciences called "[six degrees of separation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_separation)", which is the idea that all people are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other. As a result, a chain of "a friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. This idea talks about a general rule and is corroborated by real life experiments and computer modelling, and combined with this emergency brought about by a highly infectious viral disease it reminds us of the fact that we are indeed in this together. So, the positive interpretation of events would be that this awareness would serve as a stepping stone toward recognizing the larger truth, namely that we're in EVERYTHING together.

Unfortunately, as hopeful and optimistic I try to be, it has to be said that human history of the past couple of centuries, with only very few exceptions, points in the opposite direction; every time we're in limbo, every time we face a crisis situation as a collective of people, we let the ones at the head of the collective set the bar lower instead of higher; we do limbo like in the dance:

The exceptions to this rule are revolutions that temporarily lift the bar up while breaking the rules of the game, but never actually changing the game itself. Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was one of those exceptions in which the steadily increasing flow of wealth from the poor to the rich was temporarily stopped, reversed even, but as soon as he tragically died, work began to restore adherence to the game's rules. Right now the bar is at a new low point again; with the unanimous vote for the COVID-19 stimulus bill we've witnessed the biggest heist of poor and working people by the oligarchy in human history. The bar for a potential presidential candidate is so low that anyone who can utter a coherent sentence will do. With Biden and Trump as the likely candidates, the debate will potentially become which one of them has harassed less women, or which one will rob you slightly less. We're very good limbo dancers indeed. As a society that is, maybe not at the real thing which is very much individual. I say the guys in the white and red shirts win :-)
