Is a dollar saved worth more than a dollar earned?, plus My Actifit Report Card: November 7 2019

**Today's activity:** The usual - walks to and from the train station and the pool, plus a cheeky trip to buy coffee, and a detour on the way home to (amongst other things) get some booze.

**Today's thought:** The trips to buy coffee and booze today had me thinking about the old adage "A dollar saved is worth more than a dollar earned" versus the crowd that believe that cutting back on discretionary spending like _daily lattes_ will not make you rich. I admit that I feel conflicted between these two. I buy coffee sometimes, probably two to three times a week. I make coffee at home in the mornings but sometimes buy another later in the day. I like the taste of coffee ... like **really** like it. And I like the affect it has on me, so I think I get value from it? The way I pay for coffee is with a credit card that I pay off from an account that is mainly for discretionary spending. A lot of our income gets automatically moved into other accounts for saving or investing before mortgages and bills are paid off so I'm never taking from these _buckets_ to pay for coffee. I am a finance/investing/money-saving nerd, so I get excited by opportunities to save and make money, and as a result sometimes feel guilty when I spend my hard-earned on things like coffee. However, I feel like I stay ahead of the game because I am always looking out for opportunities to save money and earn a little coffee or beer money on the side.

Anyways, when I was mulling it over and doing a bit of reading on the subject this afternoon, I came across an [article](https://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/blog/save-on-coffee/) by the _I will teach you to be rich_ guy - Ramit Sethi. This point really resonated with me: "The whole point of money IS to spend it on things you love. Pleasure purchases should not be a source of shame" - that's pretty much what buying coffee is to me - a pleasure purchase. If you haven't heard of this guy, I recommend you try listening to one of [James Altucher's interviews](https://jamesaltucher.com/podcast/469-ramit-sethi/) with him. I don't agree with everything he says but it's still worth a listen regardless (in my opinion). In this [discussion](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20430935), one person states: "they don't really add value for many people but are instead a rote thing they stand in line to do every morning" - this is not me. So I think that makes it OK for me, right?

What do you think? Daily lattes? Yay or nay?

**EDIT:** The title of this post is perhaps a bit misleading. A big part of the “A dollar saved is worth more than a dollar earned” adage is about tax on earnings versus no tax on savings - at least that’s my understanding. #justsaying

I think that there is a point that saving money is not worth the expense.

What I mean is this, saving a couple of dollars a week from the coffee you enjoy. Whether it is because you like the business, or the baraista, or you can't make the same coffee at home doesn't REALLY matter in the long run.

I like to focus on the big things. What is going to change your income or expenses by 5% a month (that's just a number I pulled out of my rear) and what can you do to change **that** number? For example, you are probably paying for your bank account, an hour today could save you $15 a month for life, that's 3 nice coffees.

If you work for a business for a while, asking for a raise could increase your revenue by 5%, moving companies could change it by 25%.

When I go out to grab a coffee, the coffee has more value to me than the $5 I spent on it. I get to see people that I don't always see, chat with the one making the coffee and support a local business. That makes me happy.

Another way to look at it is this, you can only cut your expenses so far, and if you are already frugal its really not going to help you a lot. What will help you is to earn more! There is no limit on how much you can earn.

So rather than saying a dollar saved is worth more than a dollar spent, I would say a dollar earned is worth more than both, because its something you didn't have before.

Rambling, I know, but I think I made a point somewhere in there.
