Native Azaleas vs Exotic Azaleas The two main classes of azaleas, both of which belong to the Rhododendron family, are native azaleas (indigenous to many parts of the U.S.) and non-native, exotic azaleas, most of which hail from Japan. Kinds of Evergreen Azaleas Almost all evergreen azaleas are hybrids and there are thousands of them. But the vast majority of azaleas people grow fall into one of three classes. Kurume hybrids, like 'Coral Bells,' ' Hinodegiri,' and 'Hershey's Red,' are dense, slow growers with small leaves. They bloom early and profusely in spring, flowers hiding the foliage, and grow to about 4 feet tall and wide. Southern Indian hybrids, like 'George Lindley Taber' and 'Formosa,' are less dense and bloom a little later. They have larger leaves and flowers, grow much faster, and at least get twice as big. Reblooming hybrids, like the Encores, bloom in both spring and fall with their fall blooms being more profuse. Their flowers and leaves are similar in size to those of the Southern Indians, while the bushes themselves grow about as big as Kurumes.

ADD SOME STRIKING COLOUR TO YOUR GARDEN MAKEOVER
Azaleas are a much loved flowering shrub, which come in a wide range of colours and potential heights. Most varieties are long flowering and many are suitable for growing in tubs. Azaleas are relatively easy to grow and long lived if given reasonable care. Our cultural notes should ensure excellent results.

WHERE TO PLANT YOUR AZALEAS
A semi-shaded position, with morning sun, results in better quality flowers and a longer flowering period. Dew or frost followed by sun in the morning can cause burn or fading of the flowers.


ACIDITY AND SOIL CONDITIONS 
Azaleas require a pH of around 5.5 or in other words, an acidic soil. Good drainage and a light soil are essential. Heavy soil can be lightened by the addition of peat moss and coarse river sand. The addition of compost is also beneficial.

PLANTING AZALEAS
Azaleas are shallow rooted. Their roots feed close to the soil surface. When planting, a shallow half moon shaped hole should be dug up and ideally, peat moss mixed with existing soil. The top of the root ball should be at the same level as the surrounding soil surface when planted. It is advisable with a pot grown Azalea to lightly tease out the root ball before planting to help establish the plant in your garden.

WHEN TO MULCH AZALEAS
A light mulch in late spring is beneficial for Azaleas. This stops the plants from drying out quickly in summer. As Azaleas are shallow rooted, care must be taken not to mulch too heavily. It is therefore advisable to remove the previous year’s mulch before applying another mulch layer. 


HOW TO FERTILISE YOUR AZALEAS
Fertilising should commence in August to September and into spring after the flowers have finished and continue until early January or until next years flowers buds have set. In October, an application of Garden Gold which contains a wetting agent is recommended. This should be repeated in January. 


WATERING YOUR AZALEAS
Over watering generally kills Azaleas more than anything else does. If in doubt as to watering, feel the soil about 10cm (4 inches) down around the plant to see if it is dry. In summer, regular watering will be required, particularly on hot days. However, during the cool months of the year, a thorough soaking once a week should be sufficient. In winter and spring watering of the foliage should be avoided as this can encourage petal blight.

Know if azaleas will fare well in your climate. Azaleas are generally found in Zone 6 growing areas. This means that they need warmer weather where temperatures generally do not dip below 0 or -10ºF (-17.8 to -23.3ºC). Plant your shrub in the right soil. Azaleas grow well in organically enriched, acidic, well-drained soil. Your soil should have a pH level of 5.5 or to 6.0. It is important that the soil is well drained because these plants don’t do well in soggy soil. You should also avoid heavy clay when planting azaleas, as clay will choke the roots.[3]
If you live in a place without acidic soil, like in alkaline soil area such as Texas, you can build raised flower beds that are composed of a mixture of coarse sphagnum peat moss and finely milled bark.

Tips for Growing an Azalea Houseplant
You can grow azalea indoors much like any other houseplant, but as with other blooming plants, there are a few tricks you need to know about the care of indoor azalea if you want to keep them blooming year after year.

The first step in growing an azalea houseplant is to choose the right shrub. You are looking for greenhouse azaleas, not hardy azaleas, which are only grown outdoors. Both are Rhododendrons, but different sub genres, one of which is only hardy to USDA plant hardiness zone 10. That’s the one you want.

Greenhouse azaleas aren’t always marked as such, but they will almost always be sold indoors and usually come with that decorative foil wrapping around their pots. Look for a plant with only a few buds open and showing color. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy that first full bloom for a longer period of time.

Flower buds should look healthy and be at different stages of development as a sign they are actively growing. An azalea houseplant with yellowed leaves isn’t healthy. Look under the leaves as well. That’s where those pesky whiteflies and mealybugs dwell. They love azaleas.

Care of Indoor Azalea
In their natural environment, these plants live in the understory of high trees. They thrive in cool, filtered sun. Azaleas as houseplants do best at cooler temperatures, ideally around 60-65 F. (16-18 C.). Cooler temperatures will also help the blooms last longer. Keep them well lit, but out of direct sun.

Moisture should be your greatest concern in the care of indoor azaleas. Never allow your plant to dry out. While watering from the top may provide sufficient care, indoor azaleas enjoy the occasional dunk, pot and all, in a larger container of water. When the bubbles stop, pull it out, and let it drain. Whatever you do, don’t let these plants dry out. Keep them damp, not soggy, and don’t fertilize until flowering is complete.

According to azalea historian Fred Galle, in the United States, Azalea indica (in this case, the group of plants called Southern indicas) was first introduced to the outdoor landscape in the 1830s at the rice plantation Magnolia-on-the-Ashley in Charleston, South Carolina. From Philadelphia, where they were grown only in greenhouses, John Grimke Drayton (Magnolia's owner) imported the plants for use in his estate garden. With encouragement from Charles Sprague Sargent from Harvard's Arnold Arboretum, Magnolia Gardens was opened to the public in 1871, following the American Civil War. Magnolia is one of the oldest public gardens in America. Since the late 19th century, in late March and early April, thousands visit to see the azaleas bloom in their full glory.

Rhododendrons and azaleas are arguably the South’s favorite shrubs. Many people think of them as entirely different plants, but they both belong to the genus Rhododendron, which comprises more than 800 species and 10,000 named selections.

Even to the untrained eye, one difference between the two groups is obvious: rhododendrons generally have much larger leaves. From a technical standpoint, rhododendron flowers are bell shaped and have ten or more stamens, while azalea blooms are typically funnel shaped and have five stamens.

By making their choices carefully, gardeners in almost every part of the South can enjoy some of these plants, even if that means growing them in containers. Rhododendrons generally do better in the Upper and Middle South, though a number of selections thrive in the Lower South.

DESCRIPTION: Cerise coloured semi double blooms with gently ruffled edges. Small-medium rounded evergreen shrub.
USE IN: Beautiful in groups as a mass display of flowering colour. Suitable for pots.
LOCATION: Azaleas love dappled, morning and/or afternoon sun.  A full sun location may be ok but not too exposed, hot and dry. Plant in a free draining soil rich in organic matter.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: approx 1m H x 1m W.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Continue to water on a regular basis for the first twelve months to ensure the plant becomes fully established. Prune after spring flowering to promote dense growth and flowering next season, fertilise using a slow release fertiliser such as Osmocote which is specially formulated for azaleas.
YOUR PLANTS: These plants are tube-stock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The average size of your plants will be 15 -25 cm including the pot height of 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
