Phew... I'm a couple of days behind on this contest post... but it is getting out! Anyway, thanks to everyone who shared their [various inner demons](https://steemit.com/contest/@bengy/steembasicincomegiveawayinnerdemons-xgweaf3pt3) from last week. They were an interesting range of good hearted to more nasty ones, and some funny ones and some very serious ones....

This week, I been caught by an ongoing segment by the 730 Report on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, where they pose the following question to a weekly guest: 

What would be your advice to your younger (school age) self?

As the oldest child of the first generation to two immigrants to Australia, I was always embarrassed about how my parents didn't fit into the society in Australia. Not for lack of trying though, but they did find it quite difficult as it was such a different place and culture to what they grew up in. So, the fact that they were both full time working parents in demanding jobs in a new country with no supporting family made things quite difficult for them.

They spoke English well (my mum better than my father), and they did their best to integrate... but it was always a little different! 

Now, my wife and I are immigrants (the nicer word is expats... but it is pretty much the same thing) to Netherlands and my girls are very much Dutch (except they hold Australian passports...). We are in a new land, with a different language (which my wife speaks better than I) with no supporting family close by... sounds familiar!

I wish I could go back and slap myself, and tell my younger self to be more patient and understanding of the situation that my parents found themselves in. Not that I was a terrible child or anything... but this eternal patience is something that I learnt later on...

# <center>Steem Basic Income</center>

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

I know this answer isn't what you are looking for.  But I would look at my younger self and just say hey it will work out. My life from 10 to 20 was pretty crazy at times.  Yet looking back telling myself to avoid any of those mistakes might chance my life too much.  I now reached a place with a really happy little family and no way would I risk that.

More specifically, I should do one of the following.

Stay in Wisconsin and immediately begin trying to get hired as a professional actor.
Or decide which city I want to build a career in and move there as soon as possible and begin trying to get work as an actor.

Also, take really good care of my body while it's a little easier.

The advice I would give myself could only be done in the mid 1990s at the earliest: my personality differences are systematic and not pathological. Given that information, my decision -making would have been greatly improved.

Another proof that life has its ways... you ending up in the same situation as your parents.


I's like to go back to my teenager years and tell myself that I was losing out on so much by being such a good girl. Good student (teacher's pet), never went partying, never got into trouble.

When I hear people tell stories about their high school years, I am so jealous. I have no stories to tell. All I have done during those years was sit in the front row in class, by choice, always studied my lessons and made my homework, hoping the teacher would pick to answer his question. After school, I went home, did my homework and spend the rest of the day reading.

Don't worry, I definitely made up for all those lost years afterwards, hahaha. 

The advice I would give is something  I only learned in my 20s (and 30s, and still learnin, lol):
Good girls go to heaven (if there would be such a thing, but bad girls go everywhere  :0)

Your advice to your younger self sounds similar to what I would tell my younger self.. It would be to be more peaceful and understanding, and when I was younger I was like that! But at some point I lost it after years and years of adapting to a very chaotic and mean world, I sort of.. Lost myself and only rediscovered the importance of such recently.. 

I feel like not just in regards to trying to get important messages out to the broader world in regards to politics and moral issues, but also in relationships with people I know in person and family as well that I lost control of my anger too many times and I regret that.. I wish I could go back in time and remind myself to be kinder and more understanding, even when I was hurt really bad by others.. Cause.. That hurt tends to mostly pass that they caused, yet the hurt I did in return continues to haunt me.. I think people would be a lot more receptive to my ideas and I would have more friends and better relationships with people if I had continued to be peaceful and understanding.. And.. Perhaps there were good aspects of me going through that and learning such things, yet I still wish I could have done better looking back.

I found that, my guilt was a touch misplaced... what I had remembered so clearly with a touch of shame was not remembered at all by my parents!

Still, it is good to keep an eye out for these things in our everyday dealings.. and to realise that things have context and perhaps not the meaning or intent that we think that they might have (or that actions/words from us might have an unintended received meaning or intent!)...

I think you're right.. And that was good for me to read that, it helped me guilt trip myself less. So thanks for that insight!

That's good to hear and I bet it is similar in most of my cases, as I was always acting out of defense and never pure unwarranted aggression or malice.

Agreed! Definitely trying to be much more careful with my language these days, words can be powerful and I wanna use that power wisely and responsibly to the best of my ability.

The advice I would give my younger self, wow it would be a book LOL. I guess the biggest bit of advice would have to be is 

'There is nothing wrong with YOU. It is the other person who has the deficiency.' 'You are not responsible for every problem in the world regardless of whoever says it. You are not omnipotent.'

I understand the words now. I can see how if I had learned them when I was younger then I probably would not have felt like life's punching bag.  At least my father's, my brother's or my ex-husband.

I would definitely tell myself to save a bit percentage of every dollar I make. Like at least 25% when I'm in school not fully supporting myself, and maybe 10% when I am supporting myself but it's easy cause my expenses are low.

Thing is, I don't know how I'd make myself believe it. I'm pretty sure I heard this idea back then, but it seemed so unnecessary. It took a job loss, multiple experiences with the random unexpected costs that drain a casual savings dry, and a long period of trying to make ends meet with consistently lower income than expected to finally teach me that saving is not *extra*, it's *necessary*.

Oh, now as a freelancer... I really try to set aside money for the future... however, it is difficult to do with all the routine expenses and all of that! However, when you are much younger... it is even more difficult to do! That said, there are is a flip side in spending money for something good and worthwhile!... but it is a constant balancing act...

It's hard to decide on just a few, because my younger self could probably use a ton of advice. Nonetheless, here's some of the things that I would advice to my younger self:

1. Your pain isn't nonsensical. You are sad and depressed for perfectly real reasons and you shouldn't blame yourself for your own suffering.
2. Learn how to socialize, you will need it in the future to develop close relationships and maintain a friend circle.
3. Being alone and being lonely are two separate things. Train yourself to enjoy life on your own without always needing other people's presence.
4.  Be more physically active and make it a habit. Learn how to defend yourself from bullies.
5. Finally, accept it that you are different from the people around you and that life won't go easy on you just because you have suffered enough already.

Goodmorning, I love Reading the story about your parents and your experience eventhough it was the sample answer it was appreciated.
My TO-SELF-NOTE-ADVICE would be WRITE A LIFE JOURNAL. Thats a diary if life Where i put in dates of achievements, dates of failure, jobs and contacts. Friendships that ended and restpartijen New ones. Its not like a normal dear diary thing that you do every day but a life one. Things you want to remember When you ate All grown up.
I locked doing it for me so I have 4 now for the kids When for when they  leave the house its adorable sweet and real. So I wish I had My own to remenis about the early days 😉

Yes... the universe has a great sense of humour, dumping me in the same situation....

A life journal! That's an interesting idea, it will be a great gift to them when they are older!

That's something I try to do somewhat digitally now! I used to keep paper journals with lists and things I should do, did, or need to remember. Basically what you are describing! Nowadays though I find the smartphone the perfect tool for this! 

I mean, often I had stuff popping up in my mind, but my Journal was still at home... Well, it is very rare that I forget my phone at home... 

On the other hand, going through paper journals years later, its much more fun! It is something you've written with your own hands on a piece of paper. Handwriting can show much more than just typing. Was it written neatly with care, or just a quick scribble while on the go? And then, of course, you can add random things like photo's business cards and what have you. 

While writing this, I realize I should also keep writing stuff on paper :) Thanks!

Haha, i use my phone for the kattebelletjes too, but i take part in the @matkodurko contest learn&earn and for that i use a paper one i fill  in at night after the day ends, and for the kids i have the life journals with all their life achievements and all other stuff

I think the main thing I would tell my school age self is that I have (had?) no reason to be as anxious as I was, because nobody else has it figured out either. Also, practice the bass more, because older you will appreciate that. :)

My school age self got married at 17 and didn't go on to college, though I was the salutatorian of my class and had ambitions to be the first woman supreme court justice.  (No, I wasn't pregnant, I just lived in a home with an alcoholic abusive father and couldn't wait to get out of there.) My advice to myself would be, hang in there that last few months and go to college.  Though I ended up with two wonderful sons and a good job with the Postal Service, I've always regretted knowing I did not rise to the true potential of my dreams.

Life is a school. To gain knowledge, be patient, observant, don't despise any lesson, be kind, run away from evil, God is put first (this would have been the first but I allow it here), you can be anything you want, believe in your self, understand by books, always have a quite time everyday, your good friend might be your best brother. As you learn, you will discover how to navigate, so keep calm.

Ask questions! That is what I would like to tell my past self. If there is something I regret in life, it is asking more questions.

I'm not sure about other peoples experiences and other places in the world, but when I was a kid in school, for me asking questions was something you would do as little as possible.

Raising your finger and asking a question in front of the class was, to me, something I dreaded the most. As a result, I typically ended up not asking questions at all. As a result, I wasted a lot of time figuring things out myself (sometimes even years later).

Currently, I'm working as a researcher at a technical university. Here I'm also involved in teaching. While teaching, I've come across many different kinds of students. Students that stand out to me the most are the curious ones. Those who ask questions. That don't feel hesitant to ask and do not stop until they fully grasp the theoretical concepts they are trying to tackle.

I've noticed that this is a very effective way to learn new concepts fast. After many years since my time in school, I've finally started to adapt to this myself. I started to ask questions more and more.

To conclude:

I wish I asked more questions when I was younger. That I accepted that not fully grasping some concepts isn't a bad thing. Admitting your lack of knowledge to yourself and others around you is something positive. It stimulates growth of knowledge and opens your mind for new out of the box concepts, ideas, and visions.

Asking questions! That's a great one... I have this problem at the moment with my older daughter. In school, she is too scared to ask questions... She is good at most things, but when she doesn't know, she is embarrassed to let anyone know. I am trying to teach her that it is okay to not know, but you have to ask to learn!

That sounds exactly like me back in the day. I think schools should do more in creating a fear free environment where children feel comfortable. Comfortable enough to feel free to ask questions without holding back :)

This may sound a little generic but I'd tell myself to be patient and do lots and lots of research. I really can't stress the importance of research. You could tell someone to buy Bitcoin. But what about the next Bitcoin. Maybe you'll do well financially, but what about your job or friends or relationship. 

What if you got a bad deal because you didn't do enough research. What if you end up with some backstabbing friends because you jumped in too deep too fast and committed too much???

Taking time and doing your research is the key to missing out on most of your life's pitfalls. So I'll just make sure my younger self get drilled in the value of patiently doing the digging and figuring things out before jumping in for adventure!

That would be great advice... Knee jerk reactions and just going with your gut can lead you to some interesting situations... More often than not, the gut feeling is just a culmination of experience and learning rather than an innate talent.

I would probably be giving me advice that there is no shame in admiting your mistakes. It is not wrong to commit error but it is wrong to commit error and not accept it. The harder you try to cover up your error the more lies you will be speaking and making a lot of people angry.
