Compared to Facebook, Steemit is still lacking and could use these features. The IM capability would be great, however, I'm a little nervous about having my Steem worth out there and anyone having the ability to IM me.

Those are actually some of my concerns as well. I think it's one of the issues with having a completely transparent blockchain. IM capability would be really useful compared to using third party messaging applications.
