Just fictional creatures without matter or energy. In objective reality, we call that *not existing.*

Except it isn't correct at all to say germs were fictional in 1846. Germs clearly existed, Ignaz Semmelweis' contemporaries just had issues with his ideas and to some extent Semmelweis himself. 

The main issue was that his contemporaries weren't using proper science. Had they done their research and performed more tests they would've seen Semmelweis' methods to be effective. 

Additionally, it's not exactly wise to compare the scientific community of today with that the 1800's. 

You also fall into the problem of making broad generalizations by saying the entire scientific community was against his ideas, which isn't exactly true. In fact, some people in the UK actually looked favorably on his ideas because they believed it supported their idea of miasma theory.

(Bit of an aside, but I'm pretty sure Semmelweis never really described germs so much as he believed that all diseases have one cause in common and all that matters is cleanliness. Also, it isn't exactly true to say he pioneered the discovery of germs as others came before him, Germ theory has roots in the 1500's. )
