Thanks, I have been fascinated with submarines since I was in grade school. I am glad you enjoyed the post! :)

I have been in every one I could find, and read everything I could about them. I am a little lucky in that there is a fleet boat only 40 miles from here. I have been on a Russian sub (in San Diego), one of ours (USS Batfish), and a German sub (U505). I am still looking for a Japanese sub, and an S boat, not much chance, but I can hope. **`:)`**

Very cool. I love them too. I was able to visit a French one in Paris a couple years ago. I've read lots of U-boat books, and would love to see "Das Boot" some day. I often think how lucky England was that Hitler had only 39 U-boats at the beginning of WW II. If he had had just twice the number he might have won the war!

The French had a very unusual sub in WWII. They wanted a submersible cruiser and made one! This monster could submerge and surface and gun battle like a cruiser. These were heavy guns (8 inch if memory serves) in an armored turret.

But then the Japanese had an air craft carrier that submerged too!

The photo was from a composite historical archive from yahoo. I have NO IDEA where it came from originally.

Das Boot is a good movie! You should get a copy! You are right about the U Boats, it was a close thing! When we loaned the old four stacker destroyers to England, that may have been the only thing that kept them afloat.

The real victory on the U-boats was cracking Enigma! THAT single thing was the entire Battle of the Atlantic; combined with the production capacity of this country. *`:)`*
