Spoiled by (Santa) Grandma

Last week my mother in law from Germany visited us. I picked her up at Amsterdam train station. As soon as we arrived she took her gifts for the kids out of her suitcase:

The kids were super happy, but I was kinda annoyed because you know, they play with these little toy inside the surprise egg, and the next day they don't even look at it anymore. Up to the next egg! Yepp, They get every day 1 egg from Grandma...
I told her couple of times already that it is wasted money because they only play with it one day and the next day it ends up in the garbage bin. She bought 8 eggs, so 8 X € 0,99 = almost € 8! 1 chocolate bar of € 1,50 contains more chocolate than 8 surprise eggs together. I know it is fun to get as a child, but this is not normal because my mother in law always bring a bag full of surprise eggs when we visit her or she visits us. She also knows very well I don't like that she is buying them so many surprise eggs. I mean, once in a while it's ok, but 8, every day one????

The next day we went to the city and she said she had to buy toys for the kids. I asked her first why she wanted to buy toys? It's not their birthday, but she insisted. I told her that it doesn't have to be expensive because it's not their birthday and actually they have enough. So she decided to buy Lego for the kids. We went to a discount shop called Kruitvat. They had Lego this time and they were discounted 50%. So she bought them Lego. It's not Sinterklaas yet( Dutch traditional kids celebration) or Christmas, but every time grandma is coming, it is ALWAYS Sinterklaas, Christmas, or their birthday.

There was a Halloween event in the library so the kids wanted me to face paint them. 2,5 hours in total.......

Every time we go to Germany I always have to watch what their grandmother is giving them. She gives them surprise eggs in the morning. This is a routine for her. When I catch her, I always say:NO, they can have it after lunch. Or when I believe they ate too much sweets, I say no, not today.

Many times she feeds them beef Salami AFTER I brushed their teeth in the evening. She knows that I brushed their teeth because she likes to see how I brush their teeth.

When we leave the kids with grandma/grandpa because me and my husband want to go spend some time together somewhere, then they just eat whatever they want, make a mess because grandma/grandpa is cleaning it for them.

They don't behave like this when they are with me, because I have rules :-D. The funny thing is after we visited Germany, come back home to the Netherlands, they ask me for surprise eggs every time I go to the city with the kids. I always tell them that I am not grandma and I am not buying surprise eggs. They can act very spoiled after we visit their grandma.

When it is their birthday the kids get lots of toys. In the past they got more from grandma. I told her in the past that I don't want the kids to be spoiled with too many toys because it is not good that my kids think of toys/gifts every time grandma is visiting them.

I want my kids to think of Grandma/Oma every time she is visiting them, about her love and attention, and not thinking about the toys they will get or even worser, that they get disappointed if one day grandma is visiting them without any toys. I know my mother in law just has good intention, but she doesn't understand the impact it has on the children. My father doesn't have much to give, and buys 1 gift for the kids if it is their birthday, so the kids never think of toys/gifts when their grandpa/opa is visiting them or when we visit my father.

My father doesn't spoil them with toys but more with freedom. Freedom is free, from my father. Freedom in kids dictionary means: Eat what ever we want, do what ever we want and no rules. They love it when mama and papa are leaving the house for couple of hours, because with grandpa they can eat a whole bag of chips instead of a handful.

They can eat whatever they want, where ever they want. No brushing teeth before bedtime. It happened once, when we came home (my father was babysitting the kids) my father told me that the kids were eating their dinner in front of the television and asked if that is a normal thing with us. Apparently the kids told their grandpa that mama said it was allowed to eat in front of the television....(not allowed)

Well, I think it doesn't really help if I tell their grandma/grandpa how I want it. They just do whatever they want....... being a grandma/grandpa.

Very interesting story to read lot of times about your grand mother, kids around your family. I can tell you con-firmly that you are absolutely act mothers character. You want to learn good habits and good  attitudes to your kids.
It is appreciate work. 
Lot of kids like toys, chocolates etc...
But you like to choose for your kids to bring important things like as books etc... Also grandma`s will be kids she`s older age. It`s true. So they likes give toys to their kids. 
Finally I told you again very interesting story with different style.

Hahaha "parents say no grandma says yes" . I really enjoy reading this it was super funny. 

I think it's very good that you are strict and I think it's extremely important and will help your kids a lot in the future. I find a lot of kids these days are becoming more and more spoiled, not only because they get a lot of things, but because they do whatever they want. 

Many parents these days put an iPad in the kids lap and think this is child-rearing. 

Then the parents  themselves disappear into their Facebook lifes and the kids are not being watched at all. 

I think the Halloween drawing is super cool btw . Nice post I enjoy reading it

Well, our kids have a I pad too. Ipad1 😊. They can use it it the weekends and holidays. But not because im on facebook(i dont use fb anymore for years but more because i could be exhausted, lot of things to do in the house, cooking and because for a motivation for them to help in the house☺. During school days i don't give them Ipad or tv. They watch morning news with us😁. So they know whats going on in the world.thanks for reading and the tip 😊

Your post is so true @fathin-shihab. I laughed very much reading it. I can feel your frustration. But I understand the grandparents. They already raised their children and now they can relax because it is the parents job to educate the little ones. And the grandparents can just spoil! :) 
I think you are doing a good job, just stay with your rules and keep explaining them to your mother in law and your father.  Although your children will still manage to convince them from the opposite LOL!
Enjoy the grandparents, because they are a blessing!

Ternyata anak anak sama aja ya. Saya juga sebel banget klo anak anak saya beli mainan sejenis egg surprise kayak gini. Udah mahal, cuma excited waktu dibuka aj. Setelah bbrp jam dah ngga tau lagi di mana mainan itu.

Terus, kalo ke toko, liat mainan ini, minta beli lagi..duuh jangan jangan mainan ini mengandung semacam 'spell' hahaha...no, I mean, mugkin karena kekuatan iklan dan anak2 saya banyak liat video egg surprise di you tube 😂

iya benar. Anak2 mau yang ada di TV atau karena teman2nya juga punya.  Makanya saya sekarang suka siap2 kalau jalan ke kote dengan anak. Saya bilang kalau kita tidak akan beli mainan atau surprise eggs. Terima kasih sudah comment dan upvote post saya ;-)

All grandparents adore to spoil their grandchildren as they know the candle of their life will not be burning forever. 
When I was a outspoken kid I was always told to respect my elders.
You know when you come out of the back entrance of Amsterdam Centraal then you go to catch a ferry boat to the otherside. I stayed at that Vliegenbos camp during the summer 1996. I always remembered when walking back and forward from there was seeing that large object similar to a Lego piece.

Well, you also rotten apples unfortunately , but in general grandparents love to spoil their grandkids :-). I did not know you are from the NL. I thought you are british living in the UK. So I guess you are Dutch? I never been to Vliegenbos kamp, but I went couple of times with the ferry to the other side very long time ago. hmmmm,I don't remember that large object that looks like a Lego piece. Maybe it was too high to see for me :-D

I`m not Dutch just stayed in Amsterdam during the summer of 96. I have been living in London since the 1990s but I was born and raised in the Scottish Highlands I guess making me Scottish haha. That Lego large piece was around 3 minutes from the ferry on the right hand side of the road on a grass part by the road as I used to walk back to the camp site. Amsterdam is only a 40 minute flight from London much quicker to fly there than back home to Scotland. Flying to the Scottish Highlands takes me 90 minutes.
