Having been raised in a small rural town with little to offer (high unemployment, high illiteracy, low income, isolated), TV was in a way my salvation. I learned a lot from the kind of television available in the 70s and 80s. Kids can learn even more from modern television, but some conditions have to be met.

TV can be great depending on how much of it a kid gets, how good is the content and what kind of interaction family has around the small screen. Is it a good guest we entertain as family and makes us feel, look, and behave better? Or is it a crazy possessive relative that comes for a day and next thing you know is taking your bed and dividing your family?

Proximity itself can be an issue regarding TV. The physical space between the TV and the kids go beyond the mere "bad-for-the-eyes" warning. You want to keep your kids at a prudent distance from a machine that can be a good friend or a terrible foe. Much has bee written and said about the damage TV has done to the modern family. The proliferation and affordability of TV sets made it possible for the middle class families to have as many devices as rooms in the house/apartment and that little detail alone greatly contributed to family isolation.

There are many kinds of addiction derived from TV dependence (from wanting to be alone, eating, drinking, etc.). I remember the time when public television ended transmission/broadcast at midnight. It was an indirect "go-to-bed" order. I also remember how excited we were the first time we could have 24/7 programs. We would never have enough, or so we thought. But there was good parenting regulating exposure.

Kids should have a schedule for TV, as they should have schedules for playing outdoors, doing homework and house chores. If kids can learn to be ok with just some TV and give it up any time on their own, then we will have healthy kids.

The content is probably the touchiest subject. From one generation to the next chances are that the whole content looks like crap. The past always looks better in retrospect. However, I think there is plenty of good content on TV, it's just a matter of searching, showing, teaching, discussing, and balancing. Kids will eventually thank parents for that "violation" of their right to choose on their own.

All-in-all, TV can be a wonderful ally for parents to have smart, informed, cultured and creative kids if parents assume the responsibility of supervising its use.

"

Well, too much is not healthy.

Although many experts state that babies under 18 months of age should not watch any type of program, as they would develop some type of dependency very difficult to control, it is recommended that children watch television only two hours maximum a day, of course under the supervision of those responsible.

It will also depend on the type of programming they watch. There are programs that teach children the numbers, letters, additions, subtractions, among other things, that in themselves would be healthy, but like everything, to a certain extent, because in my case, I know mothers who leave their children all day on television, that children are saturated with so much program, that they begin to repeat what they see as if they had written the libretti of the series.

"

If so, then yes, I think TV is healthy for them. Children between those ages watch one thing and one thing only. Cartoons. Now cartoons may seem like silly things that are made to entertain them or keep them in one place for a long time but the truth is far bigger than that. Cartoons teach kids virtues. Cartoons teach them to be nice to each other, to apologize when they make mistakes. Cartoons even teach them some basics of science and so much more and they do it in a very indirect way.

When I was a kid I used to watch cartoons everyday and as an adult I've come to realize that there were so many things I learned from cartoons and didn't even realize back then. There's that episode of power puff girls were the professor was sleep-stealing toys for them. Then he got caught and they cried wishing they had done the right thing.

Moral; stealing is bad.

That's just one of the many things that cartoons and TV as a whole taught me in my earlier years. So I'm a strong advocate of TV for kids. I think it's a great way for them to learn certain virtues and grow mentally even when nobody else is there. But don't let the kids sit too close to the TV or their eyes will have issues. I hope your kids learn all they can

"
