The disparity has many-fold explanation, depending on how you perceive gender inequality (or whether or not you believe there is such a thing).<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, we have what we may call natural tendencies or vocations, which allegedly would account for most people\u2019s decisions. Based on that, women are supposed to feel inclined to certain areas following their natural instincts or qualities. We know it gets more complicated than that, but based on that premise and licensed through religious and\/or political views a whole system was raised and established that allowed those vocations to continue manifesting themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, historically we have a series of beliefs that led to policy making that ruled women out of education entirely, but progressively, after so much proving them wrong, women were granted limited access to certain programs in colleges and universities that kept areas such as engineering or natural science strictly populated by men. In some cultures, this has not changed that much.<\/p>\n<p>Whether nature or nurture is responsible for the gender distribution across discipline would the subject of another debate, but in this particular case, I think that there is a combination of both aspects with a certain \u201cnatural inclination\u201d facilitating the high number of women in the mental health professions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Empathy is one quality that a mental health professional must have and it has been proven that women, regardless of their upbringing<\/strong> (machista society or liberal environment), <strong>tend to be more capable of showing empathy than men<\/strong> (Christov-Moore, Leonardo; Simpson, Elizabeth A.; Coud\u00e9, Gino; Grigaityte, Kristina; Iacoboni, Marco; Ferrari, Pier Francesco (2014). \"Empathy: Gender effects in brain and behavior\". Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews. <strong>46<\/strong>: 604\u2013627.).<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I, being the father of 4 girls, want to believe that, except for some activities where physical strength and high risks prevail and condition the kind of professional to do the job, boys and girls can do equally well in most professions.
