You shouldn't get embarrassed by upvotes of comments.  Feedback is valuable, I personally feel more embarrassed when I only read and upvote posts and end up not making time to actually giving feedback to great content.  I know good feedback can be more valuable than even a $10,- upvote. 

As for the politics part, I try to stay away from most political discussions, mainly for the reason that I never fit in any political box and when I speak out about one political issue, people will tend to try to box me wrong.  I have problems enough convincing people my fiction is just fiction and not some semi-political pamphlets.
