 The online right are really good at framing issues so they get to decide what the sides are and then manipulating it to make the left look ridiculous. And I hate seeing leftists and liberals fall for it. It works like this - the rightwingers start stirring up some controversy or debate. Often this starts with a "leftwing" puppet account created by some rightwinger as a false flag, but it can also just start with loud rightwing people arguing against a point that no one on the left is making (yet). Either way, they construct two opinions, and they firmly stake themselves out as being against the opposing opinion. And then you'll get people on the left taking the bait - seeing the alt-right arguing *against* something, they argue *for* it (or vice versa). Despite the fact that they had any real strong opinions before, the fact that asshole rightwingers are arguing against it means they, as good leftwing types, must be on the opposite side. Their opinion is whatever opinion the rightwingers are rallying against. Then the switch comes. Once you've got a bunch of your political opponents arguing a position you yourself created, it is trivially easy to start making them look bad - especially if that was the intent from the very beginning. If it is an abstract position, you can start poking the holes in the logic because it is logic you created and that no one on the left would have come up with themselves so they can't defend it despite espousing it. If it is a person or organization? That's an even easier trap to spring. You pick someone relatively obscure, and in your initial attacks you make it all about going after something people on the left will step up to defend. If you attack someone for speaking up on trans rights, or advocating for people of color, or stuff like that and you will get leftists coming to their defense. And that's when you can drop your "why are you defending someone convicted of quintuple homicide?!" bombshells. By being the ones to create the controversy, they can create the sides and pick which side their opponents will fall into arguing and load it up with traps. It is devastatingly effective, and we fall for it again and again. The most recent example I've seen - a bunch of rightwing tabletop gamers started making a list of RPG companies and classifying them as whether they were "apolitical" and thus "good" (on their greenlist) or "too political" and thus "bad" (on their redlist). And of course, initially the redlist of companies that were too political were all "woke" companies. So, of course, a lot of leftwing tabletop gamers started sharing the list around going "Hey, support the redlist! If the right hates these publishers for being 'too political', they're probably good people to support!" But, of course, the list is a living document and has companies added to it all the time. And now they've added at least one literal neo-Nazi convicted of murder to the redlist because white supremacy is also "too political". But of course I'm still seeing folks on the left sharing around the list going "support the redlist!" either because they didn't notice the addition of a neo-Nazi to the redlist or because they never actually read the list in the first place they just assumed anything the right was against they had to be for. Now, importantly, not everyone falls into this trap. I've seen plenty of people on the left look at the list and go "whoah, wait, just because a bunch of rightwingers think a company is bad doesn't mean the company is good". Some people are indeed very good at only arguing the positions they themselves have constructed or at least researched and they manage to avoid being manipulated like this. But it is a very real strategy the alt-right especially is happy to employ again and again because a lot of people *do* fall for it. I really think this is a strategy we all need to be aware of and better prepared to defend ourselves against.
CW; racial slurs, hate speech  Being a former far right extremist, I have seen and sometimes used my fair share of symbols, terms and slang belonging to the far right. Some are pretty known and easy to discover (e.g. swastika). Consequently, I will list the ones that I think are relevant because of their common use or because of their ignorance by the general public. It is to be noted that the Alt Right and the far right in general love to create confusion by appropriating symbols that are not theirs in the first place. The first category of symbol is a good example. Not everyone using the OK sign is from the Alt Right. It is just a tactic used to create confusion. Finally, many cultural symbols are taken by the Alt Right, robbing it from their legitimate original owners (e.g. Thorโs hammer, used in many European cultures and in the Norse religion). A) Emojis - glass of milk - OK sign - lgbtq flag - white flag (Please note that all these emojis were first used as jokes by the far right from 4chan in order to create confusion and discredit the medias) B) Code names - The happy merchant: Jewish caricature - Chosen People: the Jews - Jogger: designates black people after the murder of Ahmaud Arbery - Colonizers: BIPOCs in Western countries - Diversity: designate BIPOCs pejoratively - Couleurs (colors): designate BIPOCs - Chances pour la France (chances/opportunities for France): mockery use by a large amount of French people to mock the speech of a left politician who said 40 years ago that immigration from non-white countries was an opportunity, as it would create more multiculturalism, jobs and improve the economy. By a former extremist CW; Violence, Self-harm, Suicide, Sexism and misogyny, Racism and racial slurs, insults  A) Disrupted life or periods of transition create recruitable Alt-righters. I didnโt want to be an extremist. I wanted to be a good person, to be liked, I wanted to be happy. I wanted my old life back. I always felt like a normal kid.I was planning to become a normal teenager; starting to date, meeting friends, etc. Everything changed when I moved. This could happen to anyone, anywhere. Moving, specifically, is not what made me extreme. The countries involved are irrelevant. Any situational change can push someone like me (an impressionable straight, white, cis man) into extremism. In my case, moving away from my home-country led to being convinced that killing, and ultimately dying for my ideology was right. When leaving the said country, I lost everything: my friends, the girl I wanted to date, and the possibility of going to parties. I felt marginalized, like an outcast. The private school I attended after moving was much more demanding than my previous high school. As a result, my (already very controlling) parents forbade from going out in order to study more. In addition, I did not speak the language of this new country and found myself struggling to make friends. What I didnโt know was that it would not be the only thing preventing me from meeting new people. I was looking for answers. โJust asking questionsโ. Why was I like this, why was I an outcast. B) Religion is the answer.  For the next five years I was completely sheltered from any possible social contact a normal teenager my age would have been able to experience (I didnโt even have access to Social Media). I started resenting, and eventually hating everyone who had the chance to access all these things I wanted. I wanted to belong. I felt like an outcast, I felt like I was the one being oppressed by society. I invested all of my spare time, which I could only spend at home, in reading about Religion. The values of loyalty, purity and abstinence really appealed to me, since they justified my situation โ I, the social outcast, that was neither able to, nor had the possibility to connect with others, let alone have sex, was the good one, as opposed to the โnormiesโ that went to parties and spent their time fucking around. I started justifying my situation to myself by telling myself that it was my own decision to withdraw from all of these social activities. Christianity was the tool I used to convince myself that I was โpureโ, they were โheathensโ. C) The impact of news  Eventually I started having violent thoughts. Being from a traditional and conservative (centrists, as they call themselves) family, I was only exposed to far right news. Without even noticing it, I slipped into the Alt-Right Onion (please refer to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P55t6eryY3g). I went looking for answers. I started consuming more "controversial" content, some including Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder, Sherman BurgessโฆI got further into all kinds of Alt-right theories about satanists, the Jews, pedophiles, the White Genocide etc... What I liked about this new ideology is that it had nothing to do with politics. I hated politics. But the way I saw it, conservatism is not about politics, it is an identity โ and there is no place for identity politics in religion, as โJesus loves everyoneโ. My best friend, and the girl I dated were black. I could not be racist. In fact, โracism does not existโ. I was convinced of that. I was marginalized. I was oppressed. If I was โprivilegedโ, why was I feeling so miserable? D) Racism, sexism, homophobia. All of those were just โBuzzwordsโ used by the left.  SJW are just exaggerating. We are the marginalized group. I even believed I got โbulliedโ because I was a Christian, when in reality I was likely triggering and gas-lighting members of a marginalized group. I hated people who wanted to force their ideology on me, not realizing that I was already doing this. Racism doesnโt exist. White genocide is the truth. I know the ultimate truth. E) Situational changes  After high school, I moved to a third country. My parents forced me to study a course I hated, and I sank deeper and deeper into the spiral of hatred. The people I suddenly came in contact with were diverse, they were everything I hated. I resented them, at the same time that I hated that they were able to do all the things I could not do. I was still a virgin at 18. I started believing that immigrants were going to take our women, and kill my race in the process of it. I left the prison that was my family, but the boundaries were still there, however I was the one enforcing them. I was isolating myself more. The time I did not spend studying, I trained myself to fight for โthe greater goodโ. Instead of getting happier, I just became more and more miserable. Since I was a kid, I was sensitive and have always been scared of violence. Moving to a new country opened up all the possibilities of being violent. I felt helpless, and exposed. Exposed to the control my parents were exercising on me, the situation that I could not get out of, and my peers, that were not only judging me, but made me question my masculinity. My new ideology gave me a fix to all of these problems. My parents think I am sensitive? Would a sensitive guy have fantasies about violence? Girls wont have sex with me? Thatโs because they are feminist sluts,I am too pure for them! I canโt go to parties? All satanists anyway. All worthless pieces of shit. Right-wing news enforced my fear against minorities, and the supposed violence that came with them. I hated my classmates, they were different (private school, rich, more sensitive). My previous school taught me how to intimidate someone with violence or the threat thereof. The news I was absorbing without a filter (Migrants muggings, immigrants assaults, presence of Islam in Europe), pushed me further right with each article. I was convinced of a โfar-leftโ enemy that tried to eradicate my race and culture. I saw everyone else as sinners, the articles I consumed only enforced my fear. I fanatically read the bible, looking for passages to justify violence. F) Violence I hated myself โ not being able to study, still a virgin, not likeable, not being able to make friends, I started self-harming. I still used Christianity as an excuse for violence, beating myself with a belt or cutting myself on my back. Left was a threat to my safety, and freedom of speech. Seeing far-right assaults and terror acts on the news never left me satisfied , however none of it was a fix for happiness. I was ready to harm innocent people. At one point I had violence fantasies about my Moroccan roommate. During an argument about music being too loud, I considered stabbing him. I lured a random guy into a back alley to beat him up. I wanted to hurt himโฆbut I never did. I never acted on these fantasies. Preparing myself for war, I was thinking exactly how the Alt-right wanted me to think, without even realizing it. I fucked up my grades. Failing at both, uni, and harming people, I started hating myself more, hurting myself more, it spiraled downโฆ So why is the Alt-Right is a suicide-cult? They ultimately convinced me that โNothing is worth it.โ I would die a virgin. People didnโt take me seriously. I wanted to physically hurt people without any repercussions. I wanted to force them to take me seriously. If I just killed myself afterwards, there wouldnโt be any other option, and the Alt-Right content I was eating up, was implying this over and over.  There was no group, there was no leader, yet I was acting in the way the Alt-Right wanted me to act. I still feel like I thought this way because of religion. In reality, it was just an excuse, because I did and could not admit that I was a white supremacist. I hated Jews and Muslims for being able to be violent compared to Christians. I had fantasies of violence. All of it went against the principles of Christianity, yet I used this religion as an excuse. Today, I am relieved I never acted on it, I am one of the few that got away. Luckily I got out. I was lucky, because I never talked to anyone about it. I read forums but did not interact with them. Yet I would have committed hate-crimes on behalf of people who are not in an organized group, let alone know who I am. G) Freedom  I went back home for summer. I took these holidays to recover, watched videos to confirm violence was not the answer. I changed my university major. Eventually, I met someone who represented everything I used to hate, and the only thing I ever did was loving her.

 I get why young alt-righters are attracted to what they perceive to be the Orthodox Church. The aesthetics are certainly powerful; all skulls and incense and ancient artwork, looking completely alien compared to the modern churches of mainstream Protestantism. It's an inherently conservative religion, in the sense that it seeks to continually maintain the ancient traditions established by the first Christians in places like Rome and Constantinople. The leaders of the Church are called "Patriarchs." The influence of Middle Eastern and Asian culture means many of the men grow beards and long hair, while many women wear some kind of head covering. These are all things that delight the kind of people looking to "reject modernism" and "embrace (perceived) tradition," as well as trying to piss off the "godless blue-haired SJWs" with what appears (to them) to be the most patriarchal and "based" version of Christianity, one that takes a strong stance against "degeneracy." Of course, this misapprehension of what Orthodoxy stands for is why so many of them wind up excommunicated after their hellspawned ideas attract the attention of the Church (I'm specifically thinking of Matthew Heimbach). The Orthodox Church does, in many ways, call for us to "reject modernity," but there is nothing so modern as the heresy of nationalism. We are likewise called to follow the order of St. Paul, to "hold fast" to these ancient traditions descended from the Apostles themselves, but you'll quite quickly find that these traditions involve an utter debasement of self in service to the Kingdom and the total rejection of anything close to what nationalists imagine as an ideal society. Indeed, the example of the early Church is the very degeneracy the alt-right tends to rail against: the rejection of private property, the callous ignoring of cultural norms, the rejection of power structures, the rejection of the rich, the uplifting of the poor and weak. I'm yet to meet any sad, angry, misguided trolls who can explain how they are able to hate Mexican immigrants while still having the icon of Saint John Chrysostom as their profile picture. I'm yet to meet any crazed misogynist whose ideology matches up with their professed opinions on the Empress Theodora or the Mother of God or Saint Mary of The Desert. I'm yet to meet any who can tell me why they could possibly ask for the prayers and intercessions of Saint Alexander of Munich while espousing support for the Nazi regime that murdered him. I've never met these people, and I never will. They don't choose Orthodoxy because they understand or believe what it has to say about the world. They ultimately choose Orthodoxy for the same reason reactionaries choose anything: because they think it will offend the sensibilities of the people they despise.

They are in essense creating a terror attack by radicalization of a person. Often the person who is set up is a person of color, or a Muslim. The FBI is quick to arrest these people. We see clearly how biased the law enforcement agencies are in the USA in the case of Matt Shea. Matt Shea helped to organize three different armed conflicts and has called for mass murder on multiple occasions. Yet he still walks around free. Imagine how quickly the police would arrest a middle eastern person who committed similar crimes. Imagine how many people on the right carry out hate crimes and are never charged. Imagine how many people are laying in wait, armed and radicalized knowing full well that they will face no jail time for these extremist hate crimes. People often talk about how racist the criminal justice system is in the USA, in my opinion the case of domestic terrorism organizer Matt Shea is as clear of an example as could be imagined. Like most of you who already know who he is, he popped into my YouTube recommended videos about a month ago. He's a former alt-righter who "defected" and came back to the left. He seems to be quite progressive to me, but according to his last video, he's pro-gun. What fascinates me about him, aside from his journey, is that he came into public awareness in the worst way possible. This is something I've heard consistently from many experts on YouTube growth: if your very first video goes viral, you're screwed! You just won't be ready for all that attention. Faraday Speaks is definitely an example of that. However, what he's doing is really important! I'm firm believer in free speech, but the bottom line is I don't want the alt-right to grow. Faraday can be a useful resource in hindering their growth. His defection seems to be genuine. It's both fascinating and endearing for me to watch him grow into the role that he's in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfLa64_zLrU What annoys me is that he consistently implies that there's some kind of pipeline that automatically funnels people from libertarianism to the alt-right. Many of the videos that YouTube recommended to me after watching his initial video also make this assertion. But that's the thing: no matter what I think of the assertions, I really love that, through his video, I'm now exposed to an entire subculture of left-wing YouTubers. Of all the YouTubers I've been exposed to (they call themselves [BreadTubers](https://www.reddit.com/r/BreadTube/)), I've discovered one that [I really enjoy](https://www.youtube.com/user/petercoffin).
