The Roof Maxx application was extensively and thoroughly researched by the Ohio State University/Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center which is part of the Ohio State University’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. The report covers the pliability, granule adhesion, permeability, impact resistance, and spread of flame as tested on treated and untreated asphalt shingles.

The product was tested on three-tab asphalt roof shingles from a 17-year-old roof in central Ohio. Half of the shingles obtained were treated with Roof Maxx and the others were used as the control group and left untreated. The treated shingles were then dried for three days.

The test results were provided to the Ohio State University research team by PRI Construction Materials Technologies.

Pliability

In the area of pliability which gives the roof shingles flexibility to adapt to weather changes, the shingles were tested in two areas: weather-side up and weather-side down or the outside and inside of the shingle. For all the tests of the treated shingle, Roof Maxx improved the flexibility both on the weather-side up and the weather-side down sides. This is important because it highlights Roof Maxx’s ability to restore shingles so that they are better able to perform against the elements. The untreated shingles did not pass or perform on two out of four measures.

Granular Adhesion

The weather-side up or outside of an asphalt shingle is covered in grainy material. As the roof ages, those materials fall away and diminish the performance of the shingle. Using Roof Maxx improved the amount of this material that was retained on the shingle by about 46%. This means that less material fell off the shingle after treatment with Roof Maxx compared with the amount that was displaced on the untreated shingle.

Permeability

This measures the amount of water vapor that is transmitted through the shingles. In this test the shingles that were treated with Roof Maxx, the transmission of water vapor was reduced by 60%. This gave Roof Maxx treated shingles a permeability rating close to that of new shingles.

Spread of Flame

No homeowners wants to risk their home to fire. The idea of spraying an oil on a hot roof might give some homeowners pause. However, roofs that were treated with Roof Maxx did not see any change in the ability of flames to spread across the shingles.

Impact Testing

The impact testing measures the performance of untreated and  Roof Maxx-treated shingles against hail damage. On all shingles tested the hail left depression marks in the shingles. Shingles that were treated with Roof Maxx performed better and had marks that were 24% less deep than those without the Roof Maxx application.

The conclusion of the testing shows that aging asphalt shingles treated with Roof Maxx show an overall improved performance. Roof Maxx offers a vigorously tested and researched option for homeowners who wish to maintain their roofs. It is also a great option for those who don’t have the budget or are simply not ready for the hassle of full roof replacement.
