That's really sad. And I actually didn't know about palm oil and orangutans. I stick to making my own products for personal care and all, as much as I can, anyways. But definitely will be more aware of palm oil from now on...

I was talking to a guy on here yesterday who is from Borneo.  I didn't know about the orangutan issue until I searched Borneo and it is truly awful what is happening there.  I don't understand why more isn't said about it.  Hats off to you for pointing this out.  I didn't know about the Palm oil issue, I will be looking more closely at the things I buy from now on.

You're right. Those that know of the problem can get frustrated that people don't understand it.

I wandered the supermarkets in despair a few Christmases ago. Mince pies, Christmas puddings and a host of other goodies **All** use palm oil. I spoke to the shop staff who just shrugged their shoulders. The manager didn't want to know either.

I put down the goodies and walked out, refusing to purchase the items in my basket.

I look at the ingredients of everything I buy now.

I made my own mincemeat and Christmas pudding that year and that's how it's going to be from now.

Us gingers have to watch out for each other.

Good articles.. I wish you can come to Borneo and witness by yourself to see what are the real deal and what are the actual things happened. I do agreed that their population are going down. Killing those lovely 'orang utan' its against the law and they are protected creature in Sabah and Sarawak Borneo. But I don't really know what happen to orang utan in other part of Borneo land in Indonesia I don't think they would like to see them got killed too. In Sarawak and Sabah they are placed in a typical special place just for orang utan. haa and orang utan mean jungle people why they called as orang utan or aka jungle people because they behave like human.. but hairy haha Thanks for your awareness I'm sure more of us do care about orang utan . The worst phenomena in here is not about the orang utan only but this matter are also effected the people of Borneo 
land slide, flood, chemical released from the oil palm production, the chemical toxic waste channeled out to the open sea through rivers and those are the most important matter to consider how it would affect people health...well that just a glance..Thanks

As long as the continuous accumulation of capital, this problem will increase globally not just against orangutans but against animals as well. The world prevails an ideologically, which throw the responsibility for everything on individuals.

For example, in this sense, when the environmental issues such as the issue of climate change is raised, concerned organizations and governments warn people to use certain products because they harm the ozone network, urge them to commit to recycling, not to use energy and cars "excessively", etc. Of course, companies use this culture to market their "eco-friendly" products to make people feel that they are saving the environment by choosing this particular product, even if it is more expensive.

On the other hand, at the country level, China & the United States and other countries with the highest CO2 emissions share a modest (non-binding) agreement to limit emissions from 2% and to market it as a great achievement and a major step towards saving humanity.

 The reality is that this "existential danger" has hit hundreds of millions of people, especially the poor living in agriculture, and that this individualistic culture drives ordinary people to become "friends of the environment", concealing a structural problem, the problem of the continuous accumulation of capital. It is all about money making!

What I regret most about being born a human is that we are selfish beings. I tend to think that we are not so good at sharing space with the wild. That we do our best to ruin nature. Why cant we just leave the wild alone?

Wow! Palm oils are more than rivals  to Orangutan. Having chased them out of the homes, leaving them to wander and search for food. What's worse that could be done to the orangutans?. Well, in cases where food is limited or out of reach, what do they do? 

We humans have to know how to check and balance things not letting our greed and quest cover our eyes.

Creative piece of work. Though i am sure deforestation is not just about orangutans and palm oil. Having said that,  seeing Malaysia at the top of world's palm oil production always reminds me of how great my country (Nigeria)  could have been. Nigeria use to be at the top but then Malaysia took some seeds from our country, improved them through biotechnology and then sent us some miles down the chart.

Quite a catchy headline you have got yourself. A good way to surreptitiously show one of the negative effects of deforestation on biodiversity. However, it should be known that orangutans are not the only endangered species through the hammer of deforestation. other innumerable species of plants and animals are lost as well.

Palm plantations are very destructive in Asia and responsible for vast deforestation. It is used in most foods such as chocolate as it is cheaper than other oils.

These kind of issues make me confused and depressed. The orangutan is definitely worth keeping (not just existing, but living) safe but there is also becoming a huge demand for things like chocolate and coffee that is organically grown. Organic foods require a lot more space in order to produce enough perfect product that the buyers will accept. Food that is not organic poisons the ground and animals. Which are you willing to choose? If you give up products grown in sensitive areas then the people who depend on the farming business to feed their families suffer. Who is willing to give up coffee, chocolate, and vanilla? It's a very complex issue.

those companies who ``care`` for enviroment, are just those who invested in buying such status. there is no way to tell how they do it. ive personally been involved in buying status of eco friendly company for leather factory. its expensive, even for low level. also, when they are willing to buy such status, it means they are doing something very wrong, and they need some first aid shield in case of accidents. 

also, as you said, palm oil is biggest export for these countries. it means their economy depends on it big time. their schools, hospitals and such. 

ok im sorry for orangutans, but this seems like, we in europe got rid of our nature, animals and clear water because of progress. Americans did pretty same, if not worse (they were so progressive, almost got rid even of humans^) for the sake of progress. 

but when Brazil wipes out their rainforest to create jobs, and employ its people, its attack on ``lungs of the world``. When Indonesia does it, its cruel and non human. 

It seems like, we will live in our developed progressive countries we cleansed of everything, but they need to live in primitive ZOO-s and safari parks, because only we have the right to destroy planet for progress?
