I like steemit but this post has me worried, is steemit really going to die because a few whales want/need to make some money?

But seriously, it's something that seems to happen a lot with startups... the original visionaries... *who authentically had a dream*... wake up one morning and realize they have $7 million in the bank (or at least in "potential holdings") where a few short months ago they were digging around in the couch cushions for pizza money because all their income was going towards their $80,000 worth of student loans. 

It's one of the (usually untouched) reasons startups are inherently risky. The original visionaries often just "want to invent shit" and have little interest in the daily grind of their creations... think Steve Jobs; even our own @dan. That's not a BAD thing, as long as there is a set of "operators" that flow into the vacuum left by the "inventors."

So, in a sense, WE have to become the new community leaders...

they're in a bit of a catch 22 though... people complain the whales have too much power, but then complain if they power down...  what are they supposed to do? and you know, threatening someone with "we know where you live" is probably not going to endear you to them and make them want fight for your cause....

Could you be more specific about the problem? After reading your post, I don't know what's going on, except some powering down?

I think it is incorrect to look to the whales like they're our leaders and expect them all to lead just by virtue of their fat bellies. Whales can lead, if they want to. Imploring them to lead is third world thinking and feeds the third world (top heavy) economy that is steem.
In my short time here, I've met plenty of community builders and minnows who are struggling to achieve based on their merits. If steem is to transform into the quality-content-meritocracy then we need to transform into a first world economy. That means: less/thinner whales (by percentage of the steem population), and many more dolphins. There must be hope for a minnow to become a dolphin and honour in being a dolphin.
So, power down whales. They're just making space for a new breed. Thanks for your service whales and enjoy your retirement.

In my opinion you got it wrong with the powering down. Few whales with combined power more than the rest of the people is not a good thing. The whales can manipulate post visibilities, rewards and are draining the reward pool by voting each other. Why wouldn't you want them to power down? If you are looking at the steem price, lower price will get more people to buy it and power up. The market will show the value of steem. In the long run ... Have in mind we have very little accounts compared to the mainstreem social media. If we ever get there than the steem price will follow as well.

That's are GUTS Chiefmappster! I'm kind of really new in here, but I feel like being in Steemit a lot, a lot of time. So this in an incredible way  upset me. I have been talking about this with some other users and what a heck man..this must be stopped. I really put my coin in @Calibrae and hope he can do it but, maybe I see him sometime a bit lost... But anyway I'll pray for his success... so Good to hear your words in here in this way... Steemit must not die. or at least..should change the name! 
Fuck the gullons that thinks in themsleves, if that's the key I prefer to smoke weed all day long away from internet and tell all the histories I could write as posts  for me and my fiends. That's for sure...
