***Detective Sergeant Arthur Clod,
Was a member of the Mets, Flying Squad.
London’s Metropolitan elite police force,
Rapid response, when they’re free, of course!
Since the days of Robert Peele,
The Flying Squad, superior, did feel,
“We apprehend the villains, before they’ve started”
“And off to Scotland Yard they’re carted.”
“Justice delivered in a manner most quick,”
“Faster than a beat walker, or a Private Dic.***


***Now Clod was a very fast learner,
Realizing that a backhander was a nice little earner!
Mr Big, of the gangster world,
Reached far out, like an umbrella unfurled.
And Clod knew exactly what to do,
Hand outstretched, at the front of the queue.
Soon Clod, who had been brought up gently,
Was driving around in his very own Bentley.
A fine Cuban cigar, stuck in his gob,
Had he degenerated into a bent copper slob?***


***Now, it has been suggested that a policeman’s lot is not a happy one.
Perhaps, with incremental payments, it could now be fun?
Of course, he must exercise due diligence of care,
To protect his tenure, so he might remain there.
“There” being as a member of the Flying Squad,
With brown envelopes, cash in a wad.
Would he like to be a Commissioner, or a Superintendent?
Or, conversely, wind up a miserable defendant?
None of these would fill the bill,
Not if they denied him his cash income thrill!***
