Learning Skin Retouching

I've been sitting by my laptop with the Wacom tablet for maybe 7 hours straight, teaching myself better ways to retouch skin. I don't think I've ever shown you a before and after images this brutal, so here goes nothing.

It's no secret (okay maybe it's a bit of a secret as almost every photo of me is photoshopped) that I've struggled with acne for years and it's a bane of my fucking existence, especially as I love to create self portraits. I'm doing everything humanly possible to fix my skin but there is no way in hell I can go without using Photoshop, not with the type of photography I do which is mostly very harsh light. I love the artistic effect of hard light, which this photo btw is not, but it's an absolute nightmare to my skin.

I have had basically the same skin retouch process for years and years; healing tool mainly, and dodge and burn to accentuate shadows and highlights, and while it has worked to a certain extent, it's never been great and the process has been painstakingly slow. I have discarded hundreds of pictures, or not even take them at all, just because there was no way that I could retouch my skin enough with my skills.

This evening I was in the right mindset and started to research better ways to retouch skin, and thank god for Youtube, it's full of amazing tutorials. I had heard about **frequency separation**, and dodge and burn with curve layers, so those were what I started to search for. Even before the first frequency separation tutorial was done and I was trying it out on this very same image, I was basically crying happy tears. I realised it would make a world of difference to how I would edit my photos from now on, and I could finally get results I would be happy with. My only regret is that I didn't learn these things earlier.

### I can finally create the kind of art I want, without having to sacrifice just for the sake of my skin.

Olen aina tykännyt (steem elämän aikana) siitä miten jätät retusoinnin jälkeenkin ihosi kuitenkin luonnollisen näköiseksi. Nyt kun vertaa tämän postauksen kuvia, olet jättänyt niitä ns. virheitä kasvoihisi, pieniä häivähdyksiä, mutta mun mielestä juuri se tekee kuvan mahvaksi ja hyväksi. Näytät ihmiseltä etkä nukelta. Luonnetta, ei kiiltokuvaa. Et muuta ihoasi posliinimaisen kuulaan valkeaksi ja jokaista pikseliä myöden täydelliseksi. Niin pitkälle photoshopatut kuvat eivät ole mun mieleen. Samoin oletan että jätät ihonvärisi sellaiseksi kuin se on. Värikuvissa. Olisikin älytöntä ensin hankkia rusketus ja sitten photoshopata se pois. Mutta olen nähnyt sellaisiakin kuvia. Ja mallelta kiitosta kuvaajalle siitä miten heidän ruskettunut ja ruskealla puuterilla korostettu ihonsa on muutettu lähes valkoiseksi. Älytöntä.

Todella iso muutos tosiaan. Ja vaikka sillä ei välttämättä olisikaan merkitystä, sanon silti että aknesta huolimatta olet kyllä sekä luonnonkaunis että meikattuna kaunis. Julma totuus tietysti on että eniten ääniä julkaistuissa kuvissa missä tahansa saavat ne täydelliset poseerauskuvat. Senhetkisen vartalomuodin huomioon ottaen.

Todella hyvin photoshopattu! Ja tämä kokemushan on sulle vain pelkkää plussaa. Etu kuvankäsittelyn suhteen jos/kun urasi jossain vaiheessa kääntyy myös vaikka muiden ihmisten studiokuvauksen puoleen.

Mutta on tää kuva muutenkin mahtava. Eityisesti pidän siitä että silmiesi ja kasvojesi ollessa tarkat, myös viinilasi on tarkka. Lasin linja ja katseen suunta. Sekä pehmeät värit.

Onpa hyvä että voin kirjoittaa suomeksi. Ilmaista itseäni suomeksi. Vaikka sekään ei ole täydellistä koska en aina löydä oikeita sanoja ja ajatukset hyppii mikä välittyy tekstiin, ei tästä analyysistä olisi tullut lähestulkoon mitään englanniksi. Tai sen kirjoittamiseen olisi mennyt 5 tuntia.

Heheh, ei oo paljoa ollu vaihtoehtoja siitä että jättääkö ihoon näkyviin virheitä ja tekstuuria vai ei kun ei oo osannu silotella täydellisyyteen. Mutta joo kyllä se on aina mun tavote että iho näyttäis kuitenkin iholta, uskottavalta. Siinä kohtaa kun ihosta poistetaan kaikki huokoset, pisamat ja joka ikinen hiuksenhieno juova, menee multa maku. Pyrin aina siihen etten tee mitään ns. rakenteellisia muutoksia tai muutoksia mihinkään pysyvään esim luomiin, ainoastaan semmosia mitkä ois jollain tavalla periaatteessa oikeassa elämässä myös mahdollista.

Värikuvat on yks prkl kun niissä erityisesti ihon sävyt on todella todella vaikeita, ei anna anteeksi tippaakaan. Tästäkin kuvasta on olemassa vielä RAW-versio missä sen todellakin näkee miten epämääräisiä värejä ja laikkuja sitä ihossa onkaan. Tämä *before* on siis sen jälkeen kun olen jo rukkaillut camera raw:ssa kuvan yleiset sävyt, kontrastit, yms kohilleen. 

Mukavaa että kommentoit suomeksi välillä, pääsee itekkin harjoittamaan äidinkieltään. On kyllä lähes ala-arvoista tämä oman kielen käyttö, ihan varmasti kielioppini on parempaa englanniksi koska sitä tulee käytettyä niiiiin paljon enemmän kirjallisen tekstin tuottamiseen.

I was just starting to write you a comment when I read the PS. part. I'll take a different approach! XD Just kidding! It's nice to learn new things in editing (and there is always more to learn) especially if it makes the work more "smooth" ;) Nice picture AND photoshoping!
