I have been on STEEMIT for about 9 months. People (newbies) just have to be patient. Post quality content in both posts and comments, and wait it out just like everyone else who had to in the beginning. It's like a job you gotta start at the bottom rung. Steemit is not a get rich quick scam.

Just joined about 2 weeks ago, i expect journey to be bumpy and slow but hopefully i'll reach there someday soon :)

I have noticed all of these in my posts.
The numerous amount of time people have begged for a "follow".
Not just here, but on Steem chat, spamming the rooms with "upvote, I upvoted you, you gotta upvote now!".
It's amazing that you wrote this! 
I will post this link below "their" comments if I find something too inappropriate on my posts atleast!

I consider myself a newbie, but I also noticed that annoying behavior. The "funny" part is that if someone comes to my post and asks for following back/votes back and so on, it actually works the opposite way. I don't even look at the profile.  I don't know when people will realize that it just doesn't work that way!

I also noticed some amount of stolen photographs without mentioning the source or author. First I didn't pay attention to it, as I thought people will not do that here. But no - there are users like that. And they have  higher Reputation than me. 

And lastly - I did enjoy your article but I am out of votes for now, so will not hit the button... just for now.  Resteeming though to come back later :)

So far steemit has been in  niche. Niches tend to have same-minded people who also have the same socialization. 

Now with the steem price rising people from other parts of the net are coming, and of course they are attracted by $$.

But since they "grew up" in a different area, they have the behavior of there. 
In the attention economy tit for tat (I follow you, you follow me) is a legit way to up the only measure - eyeballs (real or imagined). 

You get what you measure. Luckily steemit has a very direct measure: SBD. They will get used to this and learn how to get someone to vote. 

If I get such tit for tat comments I always answer that I don't believe in that and won't follow. 

You have to potty-train the facebook-babies first ;)

I also often forget to upvote when I want to /have written a comment. Other have said the same.

It seems you got hit too by the "Nice post" and "Follow me" crisis! I guess that's another growth pain of Steemit, but time will "naturally​ select" those new steemians and/or they will eventually adapt.

Unfortunately just as cities that grow quickly will have increased incidents of bad behavior so will growing platforms.

Very well said @jaki01. There are always two sides to a coin so this kind of behaviour is not unexpected. I believe steemit is a platform with a built in filter. I haven't been here long enough but I do see that these kind of Spammy posts and comments are effectively being ignored by genuine users. :)

I can only agree to what you say. Just collecting followers randomly is has no benefits anyway. 
About the etiquette, I would say it could be much worse, concidering there is no real moderation carried out. May be that could become a issue when the site grows further. One problem I see in the flagging system. Or, rather in the lack of a system in it. Everybody can shot everybody else down at will (if I have understood this correctly), thats paradise for those who join cummunities only to piss people off. It may require some kind of "court" which decides if a flagging is justified, or was only a malicious act.

It was the same on tsu, but i think the best thing to do is to ignore it and flag them when needed. It can suck a lot of energy that could be used more profitable. But the posts about the topic are winners ! \☺/

@trafalgar, @timsaid or @sweetsssj they are have many follower and good content creator, and i followed you cause i know you @jaki01 are one of science crew.

It is a normal thing on social media.  Have you ever visitied youtube comments section? I heard it's a horror story,  lol.

Of course people game the system if it is gameable - it is rational behaviour. All we can do - to keep updating the rules

You have nailed the behavior correctly, but I also believe that over a period of time they learn what the community is about and most of them change for the better.
Some people cannot be changed :D

For sure more users on steemit at these days (myself included). This leads automatically to more people with "quick money" behavior. Directly they are the role model for other, which will read it and adapt this style. 
I commented last week often on the introduction posts. Really great stories, but I saw also a tendency of posts related to point out their misery (to get money most likely).  
Hopefully this is only a wave and the begging will not be part of steemit.

You have written absolutely the right thing. Thanks for this post! I was faced with the same extortion of votes. It started recently(at least on my blog). It is very sad that the people in ways and methods are trying to move. The main thing - that this negative practice is not the beginning of its epidemic spread in large scale. Great advice. I agree, quality and time are what builds up your following. The more I have looked at people like @sweetsssj and @Kaylinart, all I see is hard work. I remember reading an article by Kaylin stating that she posts 4 quality posts everyday, and she deserves all the upvotes. Hard work and persistence will always pay off in the long term. I think we live in a world where we want to be rewarded instantly, so it can be hard when being successful on Steemit requires patience. I'm pretty new to Steemit, and I know it will take time to build up a following... and that's okay. I love being on here! :)

Yes. You are right. But it is everywhere. The more people, the more likely it is to find a jerk there. But as you also said: This is the most friendly online place I have ever been.

I noticed this behaviour of "Follow you, follow me" (reminds me of a song by Genesis) too - but not under my articles by now. Maybe, I'm not yet important enough. 
For me, I can say that my first days here on Steemit were much more successful (not only concerning financial aspects) than I expected. I suppose, that it was surely helpful to know you, because you somehow introduced me to the community. 
But nevertheless, it is so much fun to think of topics, write the articles and reflect about how to explain the subject for as many people as possible to understand. And as intended, the rewards you get an additional motivation. 
Surely, there is still the hope to reach more and more people everytime but it may be a little bit like a drug - you always want more. But actually, I know for sure that I have to be patient and I'm looking forward to the future and to the contacts and experiences I can make here.
