Avevo concluso [lo scorso post](https://steemit.com/ita/@rscalabrini/una-leva-di-probabilita-i) parlando di eventi 25-sigma. Come facilmente potrete intuire si tratta di eventi molto improbabili, e precisamente tanto improbabili quando la possibilità di trovare un valore in una distribuzione normale a 25 deviazioni standard di distanza dalla media. Riassumo i valori delle probabilità di eventi x-sigma nella seguente tabella: X-sigma| Probabilità ------------ | ------------- 5 sigma| 1 su 3,5 milioni 10 sigma| 1 su 1.3*(10^23) 20 sigma| 1 su 3.6*(10^88) 30 sigma| 1 su 2*(10^197) Per rendere l'idea, il numero di atomi nell'universo osservabile è stimato in 10^89. Un numero così elevato al denominatore manda quella frazione, da un punto di vista fattuale, a zero. Ora una piccola parentesi...fisica. <center>https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ac/Ev059HR_3D.png [Imagine C3.0 Creative Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ev059HR_3D.png)</center> In fisica un livello considerato accettabile per annunciare una scoperta importante è una probabilità di 5 sigma. Così è stato ad esempio per il bosone di Higgs. Dalle collisioni prodotte da LHC vengono infatti ricavate grandissime quantità di dati, che vengono poi analizzate. Nella caccia al bosone di Higgs, fisici si sono assicurati che la probabilità di osservare certi tipi di dati, nel caso il bosone di Higgs non esistesse, fosse pari a 1 su 3,5 milioni. Ossia, la probabilità che quei dati, che dimostravano l'esistenza del bosone, fossero dovuti a fluttuazioni casuali o errori, era pari a 1 su 3,5 milioni. Quindi, con ragionevolissima certezza, il bosone esiste, e infatti hanno stappato: <center>![IMG_20180303_115259.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeDWhv1cRgyJTXC9iBAijTswaRKZEE3XrBTG61UaCy2xj/IMG_20180303_115259.jpg) Immagine dell'autore</center> Tornando all'economia, è chiaro che eventi così significativi come i crolli della borsa sono troppo numerosi per essere così improbabili. Ma questo significa che la DN è troppo inadatta a descrivere efficacemente, in qualsiasi situazione, le fluttuazioni della borsa. Dobbiamo cercare altre distribuzioni di probabilità, ad esempio questa: <center>https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6c/Density_Cauchy.png [Imagine C3.0 Creative Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Density_Cauchy.png)</center> Notate qualche differenza con la DN? Ad occhio è difficile, ma la funzione matematica che descrive questa curva è molto diversa. Questo implica che anche i valori di probabilità descritti da questa funzione sono molto diversi. Quanto? Così: X-sigma| Probabilità DN | Probabilità Cauchy ------------ | -------------|------------ 5 sigma| 1 su 3,5 milioni| 1 su 16 10 sigma| 1 su 1.3*(10^23) | 1 su 32 20 sigma| 1 su 3.6*(10^88) | 1 su 63 30 sigma| 1 su 2*(10^197)| 1 su 94 (! la deviazione standard è normalmente riferita alla DN, non a Cauchy. Qui è solamente indicativa della distanza del valore ottenuto dalla media!) Questo cambia tutto. Ora eventi assolutamente impossibili diventano magicamente molto più probabili. È stato sufficiente cambiare leggermente il modello per ottenere risultati molto più compatibili con la realtà. Adesso possiamo anche lasciare l'economia, e passare ad altri esempi per capire come mai una serie di eventi che dovrebbero essere descritti da una DN, in realtà non lo sono. Immaginiamo che esista un panettiere che produce sempre le stesse pagnotte, per quanto possibile tutte dello stesso peso. Ovviamente è impossibile che abbiano tutte esattamente lo stesso peso, che seguirà una distribuzione normale. Ora immaginiamo che inizi a impastare pagnotte anche un aiutante del fornaio. Ragionevolmente questi non produrrà pagnotte dello stesso peso di quelle del fornaio. Quindi la DN del peso viene alterata, contaminata, e non descriverebbe più un fenomeno reale. La _leva di probabilità_, il fatto che la probabilità di un certo evento aumenti a dismisura, può essere dovuta all'alterazione delle condizioni iniziali del sistema. La forza di gravità che i giocatori del biliardo esercitano sulle palline può influenzare, alla lunga, la traiettoria di quest'ultime. Ancora, la forza di gravità esercitata da un elettrone posto ai confini del sistema solare può influire notevolmente sulle collisioni delle molecole presenti nell'atmosfera terrestre. Spesso inoltre è sbagliato attribuire delle proprietà _medie_ a qualcosa che non rientra affatto nella media. Ad esempio, la probabilità _media_ di essere colpiti da un fulmine è circa 1 su 300.000. È una probabilità media, appunto. Sufferfold fu colpito anche nel 1924 e nel 1930, e morì nel 1932, non a causa di un fulmine. La sua lapide fu colpita da un fulmine nel 1936. Roy Sullivan, fu colpito da un fulmine _sette_ volte. Entrambi sono stati certamente molto sfortunati, ma è anche vero che i due hanno avuto uno stile di vita che ha aumentato la probabilità di essere colpiti da un fulmine. Ho omesso delle informazioni fondamentali, che cambiano completamente la prospettiva sotto cui guardare gli eventi. Sufferfold era un generale americano, appassionato di pesca, amava andare per boschi. Sullivan era una guardia forestale. Calcolare la probabilità di essere colpiti da un fulmine 7 volte, usando la probabilità media, fa sballare completamente i calcoli, se la persona in questione è una guardia forestale. È di nuovo la leva di probabilità che si insinua. Un altro caso significativo lo troviamo nel gioco d'azzardo. I numeri di una roulette ideale hanno tutti la stessa probabilità di uscire. Tuttavia, se la roulette presenta dei difetti di costruzione potrebbero esserci dei numeri che escono con più frequentemente. È il ragionamento che fece Joseph Jagger, nel 1875, al casinò di Montecarlo. Assunse degli assistenti per registrare la frequenza di uscita dei vari numeri della roulette, e si accorse che alcuni numeri uscivano, effettivamente, con una frequenza maggiore di altri. Jagger guadagnò una piccola fortuna. Nulla di sorprendente, se guardato con un po' di logica e di matematica. <h2>Fonti:</h2> - David J. È dovuta a fattori che la formula matematica usata comunemente non contempla. Quindi si, anche furbizia umana, sicuramente. D'altronde la crisi dei titoli sub-prime che ha causato il disastro del 2007 è emblematica. Si sapeva che quei titoli erano ad altissimo rischio... Ma lo vediamo anche nel mondo delle criptovalute: quando una balena vende, il mercato crolla. Ma i modelli matematici non riescono a entrare nella testa delle persone. Non sempre.
