Normandy steak with a difference.

Tonight I thought I would share a funny story with you from one of the books I read written by a Second World War veteran Don Burgett. He was with the 101 Airbourne also known as the Sreaming Eagles, famous for the series "Band Of Brothers".

His family was clueless of his war time achievements and had no idea what he had done and been involved with. There had been no books published and no war films like "The Band of Brothers" at this time and his family knew he had a story to tell. He had let slip on a few occasions unbelievable stories of things that had happened. They finally persuaded him to write some books and what he wrote in his style was slightly shocking , but also funny.

He was a machine gunner whose life expectancy was three minutes. He explained once you had set up and were firing you attracted all of the attention as you were the enemies biggest threat. This makes sense so he did remarkably well to make it right through the battles he was involved with.

He fought through Normandy, Holland, Bastogne, Austria and Germany which basically covers everything. The story that made me chuckle though was when they were in Normandy fighting through the hedgerows. Basically they were fighting from one farm field to the next and it was very slow going. This took months instead of days and it was very chaotic as you could be a few fields ahead of the others on the front line and have Germans in the fields behind you.

As you can see they weren't just normal hedges.

This story is from those days in the hedgerows when they were sneaking up on a farmhouse to only find out it was occupied by Germans. It was sunset and they wanted to sleep in the farmhouse that night. They watched some Germans shoot a cow and butcher it cutting up huge steaks. Others were making a fire and a make shift grill out of a wagon wheel. The Germans had no idea they were on the front line now as Don and his group were waiting outside.

Don mentioned that the guys in his platoon wanted to attack and claim the food and a warm place to stay. He told them not to be so rash and play smarter. He explained they would attack once the food was ready. When they attacked and killed the Germans they found the food laid out on a table which included wine, Calvados Brandy and bread.

A great story and they swear blind it was the best steak they have ever had. This is how they lived and the experiences these guys went through you can understand why they became a family. When you are fighting for your lives day in and day out for years you will become very close and form a bond.
