A genuine request
**A bit of background**
*Skip this part if you want, it's how I arrived at the platform and what I **believed** it would do for me. Scroll down, you'll see where to skip to.*

I came here to make this my primary blogging platform. It looked easy to use (after I got my head around photobucket and imgur) - all I had to do was write to my heart's content and then find a few pictures to help tell the story. It's even easier now but it was easier than the blogging site I'd been using, hence the delight when I was recommended to come here.

I got it wrong a few times and found a few helpful people who told me to space out my paragraphs, add pictures etc. After that, things went really well and I started earning MASSIVE rewards. The day I got more than $20 for a post - WOW!

Pretty soon this site overtook FB as my 'go-to' site first thing in the morning. Not long after that, I started getting messages of 'where are you?' over on FB and I knew Steemit.com had taken over.

**What do I like best on this platform?**

The feedback, the interaction, the advice, camaraderie, critique and helpful people.

I get more interaction on my writing than I have on my blog site (apart from that one time...) I **like** it here.

I freely admit I'm neither techie nor engineer-minded and technical, complicated stuff is impossible for my mind to process. It really is. I've tried. So the Steemit Whitepaper has, by and large, not been read and the parts I *did* read have not been processed - I can only guess that I'm not alone in that.

I **GUESSED** that I'd be ok if I followed the rules - but this is decentralised and there are no rules.

OK, I'll default to general rules of civility. That worked for a long time. I didn't get any bother and I carried on writing to my heart's content.

I had to have a break earlier this year, three months off from writing, blogging and everything I enjoy. It was tough but it was tougher trying to make a return. I'd been away too long. I always used to get like this after the summer break - 6 weeks of freedom and I didn't want to even think about facing the fact that I had to go back to school.

I forced myself to come back and I received a nice welcome. People had missed me, missed my stories. That really made me happy and I *knew* I'd found a home.

The lifting of the 4 post max 'rule' in one of the Hardforks was quite a surprise, but mostly I stuck to four blogs a day and five on the rare occasion. I stuck to what I know best - fiction writing.

I actually started believing I could make a living on Steemit.com - *in fact, to do that, I'd have to take Steem out and sell it and though I got to the point of taking it out, I've since put it all back again - or what I had left after playing the markets.* :/

**End of background**

This is the request part so start reading if you skipped the background bit.
---

---

I've pissed someone off - or a few someones.

After speaking with @ats-david I realised I was wrong in my assumption that my work had been flagged because someone decided it was rubbish - yeah, I can be a little sensitive when people stomp all over work I'm proud of, I'm not alone in that, either.

First, how do I make this right?

Second, what are the 'rules'? - I need to know so I don't go breaking them inadvertently again.

No, I'm not whining, I'm trying to make this all go away by making it right, returning the balance.

When people feel like they are attacked, they either retreat and get out of the way or they fight back.

I *believed* I was under attack and I fought back but I don't have a big stick of SP behind me to downvote (see, I'm learning) so I used my best weapon - words.

When I found myself under attack from all sides, I used words to counter. That's what I do and I upset people with those words and so more big sticks were brandished and I was threatened with 'death by flagging' (I assume he means *downvoting*).

Now there's been time to cool off and think, I'm asking respectfully what I can do now?

I love it how you just literally wrote all I've been trying to compile into a coherent post for over a week. So I am going to follow this post closely and hopefully find insights in the comments that'll help me find my place on the steemit feeds again.

As for writing the post you were compiling... I must have channelled my inner @techslut ;) What do you think? ;)

Just one opinion: Go back to doing what you were enjoying and what was working for you. :)

Once you accept it is the wild west and there are no rules, none of the splashing and upset seems as bad.

It has taken me some time to get used to it too. Also, know that no matter what advice you get here, it is only that. Only you can decide how to proceed and nobody can stop you from that. Even if they flag again carry on they will have a new target and a new topic next week.

Best of luck! Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate.

Very good advice. Just keep on doing what you do best and ignore them. They will move on soon enough. You defended yourself and now that is behind you. Move forward. They'll find someone else to bully. They always do.

@arthur.grafo ·
Bullies do not bully the weaker, that is a misconception.

They bully those who are not willing to defend themself by fighting back.

I know, I had a very sick childhood and was very weak and got bullied a lot. The day I fought back, though no stronger, the bullies left me alone thereafter

This world in here is the same as the world outside and I do not like seeing anyone being robbed and then being advised to 'just accept' that it is how life is.

@michelle.gent, just wanted to tell you, I love your writing, so I am happy you will be continuing.

Law of the jungle, dog eat dog, big sticks rule - If the world went to shit tomorrow, that's what we'd be doing.

I don't remember who said it,

I think you were right to defend your work and rewards that you had earned. We should not face a threat of flagging by larger accounts for challenging their opinions on what they see as valuable posts here on steemit.
Now it's time to move forward with posting again knowing you stood up for yourself and other posters of fiction.

you might want to consider that it wasn't you that was downvoted as much as your largest voter being countered.

Go back to what you love and let the chips fall where they may.

No one ever said you were breaking any rules. That's your imagination talking. And considering you write novels, you probably have quite the imagination!

You were flagged because it was felt by that particular user that your posts were over rewarded when judging by your dollars per view ratio.

There are no rules in Steemit, Steemit is an anarchist wild west that simply functions on a stake based voting basis.

A stakeholder holds a certain amount of SP, and he or she then controls a portion of the reward pool.

That stakeholder can then use his or her stake to influence post payouts. No one ever needs to explain or justify a vote. No one ever needs to justify an upvote, and a downvote is simply the opposite of an upvote.

It was simply this one person's opinion that your posts were over rewarded, and that those rewards should go elsewhere on the platform. You're making a much more complicated issue out of something that is not complicated at all.

I don't think for one second you were flagged for the quality of your work. It was just a difference of "opinions" and I believe nobody is immune from that happening to them too. I also understand you getting riled up but please don't let external voices stoke those fires, if you catch my drift. Politics can be a very ugly game at the best of times.

Steemit is a "free market" and is as anarchistic as you can get. In fact, that right there forms a large part of what the blockchain stands for. Stakeholders and their account worth mean a hell of a lot here on Steemit. That's just how the technology of the system works. And to that effect, I feel we either have to like it or lump it.

Just my two cents worth on the matter. I wish you all the best and of course, do hope you stick around, @michelle.gent.

the down vote is neither a free market - or a anarchistic principle. People do not seem to understand that.
A down vote is a negative action - a free market is consensus via affirmative action.

You buy a product, and support it - affimative action.

You do not '_unbuy_' a product. (downvot ing _is_ punitive.)

One of the tenets of anarchy ideology - use no force. Down voting _is_ force (imo)

The system is what it it, but lets not fool ourselves that free market forces and anarchic principles are in play.

...Just sayin'

Without getting into the technicalities of the Steemit platform, it clearly states in the whitepaper that SP gives that user influence over the platform. Be it viewed as having a "positive" or "negative" effect depending on whichever side of the fence that individual sits.

There is no central controlling body governing Steemit that dictates whether those actions are appropriately right or wrong. It all boils down to a gigantic mish-mash of differing opinions. The buying of a product has nothing to do with the implications of the voting-based system we have in place here. Therefore, in this particular context, a person's free will to accept or reject another's decision based on their personal belief in what is right or wrong constitutes a "free market" in my book. I'm not saying the system is perfect, but it is what it is. In fact, it is so "free" that we even have the option to leave or stay on the platform if we so choose to.

So while we may agree or disagree with the order of power and authority when it comes to operations concerning Steemit, everything is taking place within a pre-defined set of rules and constructs that preside over Steemit.

Just my opinion.

Great post. To be honest, I was one of the people who was rubbed the wrong way by your "counter-attack" posts. They just came across as whining to me, and, despite the fact that as an artist I fully understand and agree with your position, were a big turn-off. But like I said I do understand. Criticism hurts, regardless of how good it is, and the seemingly unjustified and not-well-explained criticism of being downvoted hurts even more.

I like the more cool response of asking what you can do to avoid this in the future. Thank you for that. I want to know also. As an artist (I make the majority of my income from photography, and a bit of it from my haiku writing/translating) I also want to avoid stepping on the toes of whales and unwittingly making enemies of any of them.

Again, thank you for the more level-headed post about this matter. I am only a newb on here, so it may not mean much, but you have my support.

I am glad to see you still posting and trying to absorb what has happened. I too am trying to absorb what has happened. From everything I have read, and that has been a lot, it seems this person was has a problem with votes. You are on several curation trails evidently, (hence lost of votes, few views). He does think those people should be spending votes on you. His attempt at not only redistributing wealth, (a common communistic activity), he also wants to tell people who they are allowed to vote for,(by demonetizing your post), he is hoping they will remove you from their vote trails. Just the way I see it, and I hope you have a nice upcoming weekend.

You could well be right in your theory. I keep saying this, but I'll say it once more. The money is nice but the feedback and interaction is better.

This is the best blogging site I've been on for feedback. It's the best site for monetising too.

It also has the biggest potential for abuse - even more than Goodreads and that turned into a real bitchfest - so much so that people no longer go there to read and interact. Authors are warned, **Don't go there, they slate you, abuse you and sometimes stalk you. Just put your links up, announce your new book and then disappear. DO NOT READ THE REVIEWS!**

I do hope Steemit doesn't get to that stage.

@bashadow ·
I went to Goodreads once. I read a few reviews and then decided that they were mostly bitching reviews, no honest review of I liked this book because.... reviews. At least on Amazon, I could see if the person had even brought the book when they left a review. Non buyer reviews were taken with a grain of salt.
